 A former teacher’s aide who pleaded guilty to second-degree rape and distribution of a controlled substance was granted probation Thursday.
“Anthony, I’m placing you on probation for three years,” St. Clair County Circuit Court Judge Charles Robinson told Anthony Eugene Tollison, 29, of Pell City Thursday morning.
Tollison pleaded guilty to second-degree rape and distribution of a controlled substance in October.
Tollison was sentenced to serve five years in prison for the second-degree rape and five years for the distribution of a controlled substance conviction, but has remained free on bond since his arrest. “I’m familiar with this case as well as any other case I’ve had before,” Robinson told Tollison.
The judge said he made his decision, in part, based on a probation report and letters sent to him by people on behalf of Tollison, supporting his application of probation.

 Juile Pritchett, a former Clay-Chalkville Middle School teacher, was indicted on November 7, according to court records. The indictment was not made public until December 5.
The indictments are in three separate cases. Two have the charge of 2nd degree sodomy. One case has the charge of 2nd degree sexual abuse. These are the same counts she was originally charged with.
At the time of the 35-year-old's arrest, on June 19, Randy Christian with the Sheriff's Office said they had evidence that Pritchett had sexual relations with eight high school students. He said some of the students would not cooperate and some were 16 or older. The charges are based on the accusation of her having sexual relations with 15-year-olds. Christian said the incidents were on school property after school hours and at the students' homes.
Pritchett taught special education students at Clay-Chalkville Middle School. She was put on administrative leave before her arrest. She later resigned.

 Dr. Barry Simpson, faculty member in the University South Alabama business department, was arrested by FBI agents on charges relating to the distribution or possession of child pornography Nov. 17, according to FBI Special Agent Joseph White of the Mobile Field Office. University officials have suspended him until the case is decided.
"In accordance with its personnel policies, the University has suspended Dr. Barry Simpson, an assistant professor of economics, pending the outcome of his arrest on felony charges," is the official University statement.
Simpson has been published in journals of libertarian economics, including The Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics, New Perspectives in Political Economy and The Journal of Libertarian Studies. Further, he is a member of the Libertarian Party of Alabama. He was also active in anti-voting initiatives on Facebook, a popular social networking site.

A Gaston High School teacher charged with harassment of a Gaston High female student has been placed on paid leave, Etowah County Board of Education Superintendent of Education Mike Bailey said. Anthony Bert “Tony” Nunn, 45, of 240 Creek Haven Road, Rainbow City, was arrested at 7:05 p.m. Friday and released on $2,000 bond at 7:14 p.m., Etowah County Detention Center records show. A harassment charge, which is a misdemeanor, covers kissing, a law enforcement official said. Bailey said Nunn, who teaches science, was given a letter by school personnel Thursday afternoon placing him on paid leave. Nunn also is an assistant football coach, according to the school’s football program.
Bailey said the incident is being investigated by the county Sheriff’s Department and the board is investigating the incident. Bailey said he has not talked to the student’s parents but Gaston school officials have. “It’s a personnel matter, and we’re investigating it,” Bailey said in phone interview Tuesday. “I can’t really comment on it,” Bailey said. The complaint was filed Nov. 5 with the Sheriff’s Department by a 16-year-old female student and her guardians. According to the Sheriff’s Department incident report, Nunn on Nov. 4 pulled the student into a closet from a hallway in the school and began kissing her. The victim told investigators she pulled away from him and asked what he was doing. She told investigators Nunn several times previously had said how pretty she is. Bailey said Nunn was placed on administrative leave until the board can investigate the incident and can meet to discuss options. The next board meeting is Nov. 18, and Bailey said it could be discussed then. “We’re trying to do everything procedurally right,” Bailey said. Bailey said he did know how long Nunn has been at the school but that Nunn has been with the school system several years and has taught at other schools in the system.

Former Demopolis High School teacher and assistant coach Nathan Wesley Hallman did not appear Wednesday for arraignment at the Marengo County Courthouse.
Instead, Hallman waived arraignment through his attorney.
Hallman is under indictment for second-degree (statutory) rape and enticing a child for immoral purposes.
Both charges are felonies. Hallman is accused of having sex with an underage female student, which came to light in March. Hallman then attempted to resign, DHS principal Dr. Isaac Espy said. However, Espy and DCS Superintendent Dr. L. Wayne Vickers both refused to accept Hallman’s resignation. Instead, the pair referred the matter to the school board, which opted to fire Hallman and refer his case to the state board of education, which has the right to revoke teaching credentials. Hallman was replaced by a former DHS teacher for the remainder of the 2007-08 academic year. The grand jury returned Hallman’s indictment as one of more than 70 true bills in June.

 A former high school teacher, accused of several sex crimes, has turned himself in to officers. Brian Keith McGuire resigned from his position at Clements High School back in 2002 amid allegations of sexual misconduct. He wasn't charged in that case -- but now faces several charges relating to an incident in 1990.
He's accused of attacking a 19-year-old woman -- and is charged with rape, sodomy and sexual assault. McGuire turned himself in at the Lauderdale County Detention Center Friday morning.

 Charlene Schmitz, 54, of Leroy, Alabama and a teacher at Leroy High School has been charged with second-degree rape and second-degree sodomy on allegations that she had sex with a 14-year-old boy.
Schmitz came to the attention of authorities when the boy’s mother came to them with stacks of explicit e-mails she claimed the teacher sent to her son. When police questioned the boy he admitted to the sexual relationship, said it had been going on since April and usually at Schmitz’s residence.

Opp High School's assistant principal, arrested earlier this month on allegations of inappropriate behavior of a sexual nature, now faces more sex-related charges, an Opp Police Department spokesman said Thursday.
Jonathan Townsend, 40, was arrested at his Troy home Wednesday as the result of a continuing investigation into his alleged "inappropriate behavior," according to a release from the OPD.
This is Townsend's second arrest after being placed on leave by school board officials on Feb. 7. Townsend's employment leave stems from allegations of an undisclosed nature involving a student, according to school board officials..

A former Montgomery Junior High band director will go to prison soon for having sex with a student.
Twenty-nine year old Quinton Mosley pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of sodomy after investigators testified he had an inappropriate relationship with a 13 year old girl.
Mosley served as band director at Brewbaker Junior High School until last April, and then his legal problems began.
Prosecutors won't say where the incidents happened, but one thing is for sure; Quinton Mosley spent a lot of time with the girl inside and outside of class.

An English teacher at a small Alabama high school has been charged with having sex with at least four students and allegedly involving one in a plot to kill her husband.
Officials released few details but said the husband, a gym teacher who taught at the same school last year, was unharmed.
