 A former Anchorage school teacher convicted of molesting a boy in Washington state was sentenced Wednesday to more than four years in prison after a plea deal that spares him prosecution for allegedly molesting another child in Alaska, according to Snohomish County prosecutors.
Alex Mayo, 32, pleaded the equivalent of no contest to a felony count of sexually molesting a child that could have brought him life in prison, said deputy prosecuting attorney Laura Twitchell. As part of the deal, he got 51 months in prison and had three counts reduced to one for contacts with a 9-year-old boy in Washington.
The former elementary teacher was also facing four counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor in an Anchorage case filed in April. However, Mayo's lawyer brokered a deal with Alaska prosecutors to drop the charges against him here as part of the Washington plea, Twitchell said.

He groomed a young teen online for years to have sex with her and then traveled to Alaska to do it. Today 30-year-old Brock Purviance, a former music teacher from Colorado, learned he'll spend five years and 11 months in jail for that crime.
Federal prosecutors say he first contacted his victim when she was 13, and then methodically groomed her in their e-mail and chatroom conversations toward sexualized thoughts and behavior.
In August 2004, he flew to Alaska knowing her parents would be away at a funeral and had sex with her. She had just turned 15.
Prosecutors allege Purviance had other victims. He must register as a sex offender, stay away from people under the age of 18, and after he does his time, he will be on supervised release for 25 years.

A former Huron High School math teacher and freshman boys' basketball coach was arraigned Wednesday on charges related to an alleged sexual relationship with a student at a school where he used to work.
Westland resident Clark Sexton, 30, appeared for a video arraignment Wednesday in 35th District Court in Plymouth before Magistrate Eric Colthrust.
Sexton was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.
A plea of innocent was entered on his behalf and a $30,000 bond was set. A preliminary examination of the evidence against him is set for Friday.
The charges stem from an alleged relationship Sexton had with a student that began when she was 14. He was a principal at Agape Christian Academy in Canton Township at the time, according to police. He left last year to teach in Huron.
