James Barany was arrested in August in Santa Cruz. He had agreed to meet a Santa Cruz police officer who was posing as a 13-year-old girl. Barany pled guilty back in November, but today learned he will spend six months in jail. He will also serve five years probation and be required to register as a sexual offender for the rest of his life.
Hope Jacoby  An athletic trainer at Tustin High School has been arrested on suspicion of engaging in unlawful sex acts with a student at the school, an Orange County sheriff's spokesman said Wednesday. Hope Jacoby, 23, who has worked with athletes at the school for the last year, was arrested last week on suspicion of oral copulation of a minor and unlawful sex with a minor, said Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino. Sheriff's deputies were informed of the unlawful acts by someone who saw a text message photograph, Amormino said. The boy was between 14 and 17 years old. Jacoby, who lives in San Juan Capistrano, was jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail, Amormino said. Investigators believe there may have been other victims, he said. Sheriff's officials arrested Jacoby because she abused a "position of trust," Amormino said. "Even though the age gap may be fairly close, it's still illegal and we will arrest," he said. A 15-year-old boy and a 20-year-old former student told police they were molested by Manuel Rivera, 66, Salinas police Sgt. Don Cline said. Rivera, a Spanish teacher at Everett Alvarez High School, was arrested Nov. 1 after a 16-year-old boy reported being molested by Rivera. The boy stayed after school to get help with schoolwork when the alleged incident occurred, police said. Rivera posted bail and was released from Monterey County Jail. After news coverage of the teacher's arrest, the other boys came forward, police said. Rivera was arrested Tuesday at his home and lodged into county jail with bail set at $1.8 million. Police are recommending that he be charged with 18 counts of committing a lewd act upon a child and one count of annoying a child. Dietlin was arrested in San Mateo on Nov. 22 after allegedly showing up for a date with "Jackie," a teenage persona created on MySpace by two teen boys, according to Wagstaffe. The 15-year-old San Mateo County boys posted the online profile as a joke, Wagstaffe said. When Dietlin allegedly contacted "Jackie" in April, the boys initially played along, he said. Over time, the communication included sexually explicit e-mails and text messages, police said At one point, Dietlin allegedly sent "Jackie" a naked photo of himself, Wagstaffe said. The boys finally decided to call police, Wagstaffe said. Burlingame officers began posing as "Jackie" and set up a date at a location in San Mateo on Nov. 22, Wagstaffe said. A Santa Monica middle school teacher pleaded guilty today to multiple counts of illegal sex acts with young girls and is scheduled to be sentenced to 14 years in state prison, prosecutors said. Thomas Arthur Beltran, 61, taught at Lincoln Middle School for 20 years and admitted to sexually molesting nine girls. Beltran also admitted to molesting two others but was not charged in those cases because the statute of limitations had expired. The plea deal was reached as a preliminary hearing in the case was set to begin. The counts against Beltran include continuous sexual abuse, lewd act on a child and sexual penetration with a foreign object of a child younger than age 14. Judge William Hollingsworth sentenced Beltran to 14 years in state prison and required that he register as a sex offender when he is released. Beltran, who taught English as a second language to seventh graders at Lincoln Middle School, was arrested in May when a 12-year-old student reported incidents of alleged abuse to her parents, launching an investigation by Santa Monica police.

Michael John Kozak  A former Crescent Elk Middle School teaching assistant pleaded guilty Friday to the molestation of a child in his home.
Michael John Kozak, 36, is facing up to eight years in prison for the offense, said Del Norte County District Attorney Mike Riese. Kozak had worked for the school district since January, according to district officials. Authorities said the victim was a student Kozak had worked with at the school. He was also a Del Norte Youth Soccer Association coach before his arrest. The DNYSA officials said after his arrest, he was no longer coaching. Riese said he was pleased with the guilty plea coming one month after Kozak's arrest, because sex-offense cases usually take much longer and most often go to trial. "An early (guilty) plea is a good thing, because a trial can go to six to seven months and it's not a sure thing," he said. Craig Dinwiddie  A 20-year Gonzales High School teacher faces more than three years in prison after pleading no contest Thursday morning to felony counts of possessing child pornography.
Craig Dinwiddie, 52, a Spanish teacher at the time of his arrest, turned himself in at the Gonzales Police Department in July as investigators collected a growing amount of evidence against him. Dinwiddie pleaded no contest to two felony counts of possessing child pornography and six misdemeanor counts of child exploitation. Monterey County Deputy District Attorney Gary Thelander said Dinwiddie had not molested any children. Police have said they were tipped off in late May when someone called the department reporting that two people had received child pornography from an unknown person using the AOL Internet service provider in Gonzales. Jonathan Ulloa Ruano  A 22-year-old teacher's aide was arraigned Wednesday on charges that he had unlawful sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old female student, prosecutors said.
Jonathan Ulloa Ruano, of Santa Ana, pleaded not guilty. He was ordered held on $20,000 bail but has since been released. "I'm innocent," Ruano said in a telephone interview. "Nothing happened." Ruano was an instructional assistant at Community Day School in Santa Ana, prosecutors said. The girl is a ninth-grade student at the school. Between June 1 and July 31, Ruano is accused of having an unlawful sexual relationship including intercourse with the victim on multiple occasions at his Santa Ana home, prosecutors said. Angela Burrell, a spokeswoman for Santa Ana Unified School District, said Ruano was a substitute instructional assistant until June. He has not worked for the district since then, she said. Carl Kubicek  A former Pitman High School teacher sentenced to nine months in jail for having sex with his 17-year-old student won't get to serve his sentence at home, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday. Carl Troy Kubicek, 36, was denied for the department's home detention program, which allows defendants to serve their jail time from home while wearing an electronic ankle monitor, said deputy Royjindar Singh, the Sheriff's Department spokesman. "This is not a slap on the wrist, it is a clear message," said Deputy District Attorney Annette Rees. "Of all places, the children in our community should be safe from exploitation at their school, and from their teacher or coach. "I hope Mr. Kubicek will spend many unpleasant hours in jail considering the damage his selfish gratification has caused." Kubicek began his sentence Tuesday at the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center in Modesto. He will be required to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence, Singh said. Kubicek may still apply for an alterative work program that allows inmates to live at home and do community service for the final three months of a sentence, Singh said. A former Turlock Christian School teacher involved in an alleged sex scandal recently gave birth to a baby and couldn't appear in court today, her attorney said.
Amy Northcutt and Justin Northcutt, also a former teacher at the same school, were arrested about six months ago after being accused of trying to arrange group sex with a 16-year-old student by sending her sexually explicit text messages, according to court documents.
Defense attorney Bob Chase said Amy Northcutt gave birth less than a month ago.
Judge Timothy Salter set the couple's next court date for Feb. 27. The Northcutts both pleaded not guilty to one felony count each of "harmful matter sent with intent of seduction of a minor" in October.
They are accused of sending messages and photos to the girl, Sheriff's Department spokesman Royjindar Singh said.
Singh said an investigation found no evidence of sexual contact between the Northcutts and the girl or evidence of other victims.

Former San Jacinto drama teacher was sentenced to 20 months in prison today for molesting a 15-year-old male student.
Jack Wayne McLaughlin, 71, was led away from court in handcuffs after his sentence. He pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd acts on a child after prosecutors said he took advantage of one of his students who was assigned as a teacher aide at San Jacinto High School.
The victim read a statement to the court with a quivering voice saying McLaughlin worked to gain his trust prior to the molestation.
During the boy's sophomore year, he said McLaughlin locked him in a room and forced him to have sex with him. McLaughlin is no longer employed by the San Jacinto Unified School District.
McLaughlin's attorney, Forrest Wright, said the boy's statement to the judge was embellished from what he originally told police and he never indicated McLaughlin was violent toward him.
A probation officer and court psychologist recommended McLaughlin be placed probation, rather than serve jail or prison time.
But Judge Dennis A. McConaghy said the actions showed premeditation thought went into the crimes to gain the victim's trust and ordered McLaughlin to serve 20 months in state prison and register as a sex offender.
As he was handcuffed and asked if he had any questions, McLaughlin replied, "I guess there's nothing I can say."

A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a 4-year-old boy at a local YMCA day-care center.
Garrett Ammon, a teacher for the YMCA's day-care center, was arrested on suspicion of lewd acts with a child Friday after Upland police detectives spoke with the 4-year-old boy's parent, according to police. The parent arrived Friday at the Police Department to report his son may have been sexually abused at the Upland YMCA during day care, police said.
Detectives interviewed the child and later went to the YMCA to continue the investigation, speaking to other children and Ammon. The investigators were able to corroborate the child's statement, police said.
Police later searched the suspect's home where they seized evidence in the case, according to police. Police detectives are still interviewing students who were being supervised by Ammon. Ammon was booked into West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of lewd acts with a child. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. Sentencing was postponed Monday in the case of a former Long Beach teacher convicted of having sex with two teen girls.
John David Kinard, 37, entered a no contest plea - considered the same as a guilty plea by criminal courts - to all eight felony counts filed against him in November.
When Kinard appeared in court Monday handcuffed and shackled and wearing a county jail-issued blue shirt and pants, he was quiet and kept his head down throughout the brief proceedings.
The charge against the educator stemmed from two victims who were both about 15 at the time of the incidents and were friends or related to his fiancee's family, said Deputy District Attorney Bob Hight.
Kinard admitted to having consensual intercourse with the girls, performing oral sex with the teens and taking extremely explicit nude photographs of his victims - including pictures of him with one of the girls - before sending the images over the Internet, Hight said.
Kinard was teaching at a Los Angeles charter school at the time of his arrest by the Long Beach Police Department on Aug. 1, but he lived in Long Beach and taught in the Long Beach School District at the time of the incidents, authorities said.

A former assistant girls basketball coach who was arrested in September on suspicion of having sex with an underage student is back behind bars today, after violating a protective order related to the previous case, authorities said.
Thomas Cole, a 32-year-old man who worked as an assistant basketball coach and campus supervisor at Aliso Niguel High School, was arrested early this morning after allegedly texting the teen-age girl he is accused of having unlawful intercourse with, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Cole is currently facing charges of unlawful sexual intercourse, oral copulation of a person under 18 and sexual penetration by a foreign object of a victim under 18. He pled not guilty to those charges in September and is expected back in court Wednesday.
In that case, the court issued a protective order instructing Cole to stay away from the unidentified girl, Amormino said.
Deputies made contact with Cole when they saw his car parked at Rhona Drive and Niguel Heights Boulevard at about 12:20 a.m., Amormino said. Deputies found his car to be suspicious and inspected the car.

A Capistrano Valley High School teacher is accused of having sex with one of his underage students.
25 year old Aaron Westbrook, a social science teacher at the high school, was taken into custody on the campus Monday after school officials called authorities, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
School officials say they became aware of the incident when another student, a friend of the victim, told a teacher about the alleged sexual encounter which is believed to have taken place at Westbrook's former San Clemente home.
Authorities would not disclose the girl's age because it might identify her, but she is 14 to 17 years old, Amormino said.
The encounter with the student is believed to have been consensual, but against the law because the student is a minor, Amormino said.
"It was consensual but still unlawful," Amormino said. "A teacher should know better. Anyone in that position should know better."
In addition to being a science teacher at the school, Westbrook is also listed as the coach for the school's surf team and an assistant girls' volleyball team.

A Former Fresno Unified Teacher Arrested for Sex with a Minor
Clovis Police late Wednesday arrested 28-year-old Ephraim Aguirre II for having unlawful sex with a minor, a former student of his. Detectives are concerned there may be more potential victims.
Aguirre worked for the Fresno Unified School District as a full-time substitute history teacher at McLane High School during the 2006-2007 school year. He may have worked as a student intern and/or a teacher at as many as two other Fresno Unified schools. Clovis Police officers served a search warrant at his apartment in the 700 block of Villa on Wednesday to find that he had moved from Clovis to Fresno. They then received permission to enter his new house in the 3700 block of N. Ninth in Fresno. Officers arrested Aguirre for one count each of the following felonies: oral copulation with a minor, penetration with a foreign object, and unlawful sex with a minor under the age of 18. Clovis Police are also conducting an investigation into hundreds images of child pornography found on one of Aguirre’s personal computers.

A Piner High School soccer coach pleaded no contest Monday afternoon to committing oral copulation with a 16-year-old girl who was intoxicated and incapable of resisting.
Richard Alexander Vives, 42, of Santa Rosa, agreed to the plea agreement as his preliminary hearing on seven felony and one misdemeanor charges was about to begin in Sonoma County Superior Court.
Vives was also charged with oral copulation, penetration with a foreign object and sexual battery, and a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The victim was a friend of Vives' 16-year-old daughter who spent the night at the Vives residence between 50 and 75 times, defense attorney Kristine Burk said. Burk said both Vives and the girl consumed alcohol prior to the offenses and were the only ones awake in the house on the morning of Oct. 3.
"He's a good man who made a mistake. This was not intercourse. He is not a predator. There was no force or coercion," Burk said after Vives's plea. The girl's family declined to comment Monday afternoon after the plea.

A psychological evaluation of an former Manzanita Elementary School fifth-grade teacher awaiting sentencing for molesting three of his former students says that he may be a dismal candidate for probation and has a long history of inappropriately touching and fondling young girls.
"Moreover, there is a disturbingly predatory pattern to his behavior, working himself into positions of trust as a youth pastor and elementary school teacher where he could prey on his preferred targets," psychologist David L. Wilson wrote in his evaluation.
Joshua Edward Hoffman, 26, of Redding pleaded guilty earlier this month to three of 12 felony counts of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child under the age of 14.
Under the plea deal, should a judge find him a suitable candidate, Hoffman would receive a 12-year suspended sentence and would be placed on probation for seven years.
He also would have to complete a sex offender treatment program.
But if the judge determines otherwise, he would be sentenced to eight years in prison.

Former high school teacher David Lista was sentenced Monday in San Mateo County Superior Court to two years in state prison, three months after pleading no contest to drug and child pornography charges
Lista wept during a 20-minute statement to the court before he was sentenced, according to Elaine Tipton, the county's supervising deputy district attorney.
Lista, 36, emphasized the role his drug addiction played in his crimes, said Tipton, who represented the county during the hearing. The former English teacher at Mills High School in Millbrae was caught earlier this year videotaping female students using the restroom. Investigators found child pornography on his home computer.
David Miller, superintendent for the San Mateo Union High School District, also spoke during the sentencing hearing. Miller emphasized the toll Lista's actions have taken on parents, students and teachers at Mills, said Tipton.
"We have to have a position of honor for the kids," Miller said after the hearing. "Sadly, it was terribly broken in this case."
Miller praised prosecutors for doing "an excellent job on presenting the viewpoint and loss of innocence for the district."
Lista, a Belmont resident, pleaded no contest in August to felony possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of child pornography and two misdemeanor counts for videotaping 19 girls with a camera placed in the false ceiling of the restroom.

A former Birmingham High School coach convicted of molesting teenage girls in his after-school basketball program was sentenced to six years in prison Friday.
Kevin Lamont Thomas, 40, took a plea deal with prosecutors that cut his number of charges from 14 felonies and three misdemeanors - carrying a potential sentence of more than 30 years - to two felonies and a misdemeanor.
The sentencing in Van Nuys Superior Court followed a months-long investigation that uncovered seven victims, though charges relating to two of the girls were dropped because the statute of limitations had expired.
In Thomas' car, police found videotapes of the coach molesting two of the girls during what he told them were "athletic massages," said Los Angeles police Detective Dennis Derr, the lead investigator on the case.
Derr also discovered that Thomas took one girl to a local hotel for a weekend and had sex with her just days before his arrest in June.
The girls, all in their teens, attended school in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys and knew Thomas through his private Sports Challenge basketball clinic, which he often held after school on public school campuses. He gained the trust of the girls and their families by saying he had connections and could get them scholarships to universities.

A former Albany teacher will not face criminal charges after admitting to a sexual relationship with a former student in the early 1990s, according to her defense attorney.
The Alameda County District Attorney's Office agreed to drop charges against Kay Sorg in exchange for her admission of the relationship as well as her resignation from the Albany Unified School District and an agreement to surrender her teaching credential, said her attorney, Elizabeth Grossman.
"Ms. Sorg and her husband are greatly relieved that the criminal charges had been dismissed," Grossman said this morning. "It is the hope of all of the parties that this will provide closure, to allow everyone to go forward and have a healthy life."
Sorg was not available for comment, nor were Assistant District Attorney Danielle Hilton, who was prosecuting the case, and Albany Unified School District Superintendent Marla Stephenson.
Sorg, a former Albany Middle School science teacher, was charged with two felony counts of oral copulation of a person under 16 and two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object.

A Vintage High School math teacher has been arrested and charged with child molestation. Josesat (Joe) Estrada, 35, who lives in Sonoma County, was arrested this weekend in Napa on 18 separate counts involving lewd acts with a child under 18. He is being held in the Sonoma County jail on $250,000 bail. Estrada and the boy believed to be his victim know one another, police said.
The boy is not a Vintage student, according to police. Estrada has been a teacher at Vintage since 2005, according to Vintage High School Principal Eric Schneider. “I received a phone call on Sunday about Joe’s arrest. This is a very sad and devastating day for Vintage,” Schneider said Monday morning. “I am sure the first concern parents who are hearing about this is, ‘does it involve any of our students?’” Schneider said. “I want to make it very clear that this tragic incident does not involve anyone (attending) our high school.” Estrada is originally from Tempe, Ariz., Schneider said.

Humboldt County Superior Court judge ruled Thursday there is sufficient evidence to charge 41-year-old former Fortuna high school teacher Dierdre Peterson with allegedly having an affair with a 17-year-old student.
Shortly before her arrest in early October, Peterson - a former English teacher at Fortuna Union High School who has been placed on administrative leave -- was charged by the Humboldt County District Attorney with one felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse and one misdemeanor count of child molestation.
Aaron Starcher, a Fortuna Police Department detective, described the case at a preliminary hearing Thursday, which was attended by Peterson who has been released on bail.
According to Starcher, investigators believe the alleged victim knew Peterson from his sophomore English class, and from Youth Alive, a Christian student club that Peterson advised. Starcher also testified the alleged victim knew Peterson and her husband and was frequently allowed to stay over at the couple's home.
One night in June, 2008, while Peterson's husband was gone, the alleged victim was allowed to spend the night at the house, Starcher testified. According to Starcher, Peterson began to give the 17-year-old boy a back massage, which allegedly escalated into oral sex and intercourse.

A female high school English teacher who had sex with an underage girl at her school was sentenced Thursday to three years probation.
Crissy Torcella Hisey, 28, must also serve 118 days in the county jail, to be served on weekends, according to court records. But Hisey will not have to register as a sex offender, said Ryan Hightower of the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.
Hisey pleaded guilty in August to 10 counts of oral copulation with a child under 18. As part of a plea agreement, Riverside County Superior Court Judge John Monterosso dismissed a charge of distribution or exhibition of lewd material to a minor.

A high school band director in Orange County pleaded not guilty Monday to eight felony charges linked to allegedly having an unlawful sexual relationship with a student.
29-year old Carlie Rose Attebury, who was the school's band director, was charged with two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and six other counts, including dissuading a witness from reporting a crime.
Deputy District Attorney Susan Kang Schroeder says a student admitted having sex with the teacher in February and April. He was 15 or 16 years old at the time.
The principal at El Modena became suspicious of the relationship and contacted the Orange Police Department in October, prosecutors said.
Attebury is on unpaid leave from Orange Unified School District. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 26. If convicted, Attebury faces eight years and eight months in state prison.

A Former Fresno Unified Teacher Arrested for Sex with a Minor
Clovis Police late Wednesday arrested 28-year-old Ephraim Aguirre II for having unlawful sex with a minor, a former student of his. Detectives are concerned there may be more potential victims. Aguirre worked for the Fresno Unified School District as a full-time substitute history teacher at McLane High School during the 2006-2007 school year. He may have worked as a student intern and/or a teacher at as many as two other Fresno Unified schools.
Clovis Police officers served a search warrant at his apartment in the 700 block of Villa on Wednesday to find that he had moved from Clovis to Fresno. They then received permission to enter his new house in the 3700 block of N. Ninth in Fresno. Officers arrested Aguirre for one count each of the following felonies: oral copulation with a minor, penetration with a foreign object, and unlawful sex with a minor under the age of 18. Clovis Police are also conducting an investigation into hundreds images of child pornography found on one of Aguirre’s personal computers.

A former teacher who faces sex abuse charges in St. Lawrence County is now in federal custody.
U.S. Marshals picked up 67 year old Patrick Romeo in Fort Covington, Franklin County, according to The Plattsburgh Press Republican.
Romeo is accused of being a fugitive from justice for failing to notify authorities when he moved from California, where he is a registered sex offender, according to the paper.
Locally, he was arrested in October by State Police for the alleged sexual molestation of a seven year old boy at the Massena town beach.
Romeo also faces local charges in Franklin County for the alleged sexual abuse of two boys in the past two months.

The longtime director of Tulare Western High School's marching band was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of viewing and downloading pornography of children as young as 4.
Raymond Ferenci, 52, was taken into custody at his Visalia home without incident, said Capt. Jerry Breckinridge of the Tulare Police Department.
Ferenci has been on paid leave since May, when police began investigating text messages of a potentially sexual nature the teacher allegedly had sent to some female students, said Alfonso Gamino, an assistant superintendent with the Tulare Joint Union High School District.
Ferenci allowed police to search two personal computers in his home, where the child pornography was discovered.

A former Corona high school teacher was sentenced Thursday to two years in state prison after pleading no contest to having sex with a minor.
Brad Jason Theobald, 28, sat quietly in the courtroom in Superior Court in Riverside as Judge Robert W. Armstrong sentenced him to concurrent two-year terms on each of the eight counts he faced.
The charges included five counts of having unlawful intercourse with a minor and three of oral copulation with a minor. Theobald then was handcuffed and taken into custody.
Charges stem from incidents that began in April 2007, while Theobald was a biology teacher and cross-country coach at Centennial High School, and continued through August 2007.
The girl was a 16-year-old Centennial student at the time, court records show. Armstrong sentenced Theobald to the middle term on each count because he believed the acts involving the girl and Theobald were consensual and that Theobald was not preying on students at the school.

Police say a 67-year-old teacher was arrested on suspicion of fondling two female students at the Inglewood Middle School where he works.
William Nelson Mangan was arrested Tuesday at Crozier Middle School, 120 W. Regent St. A 13-year-old girl told school officials Mangan fondled her clothed breast during class, Inglewood police said.
Another student, a 12-year-old girl, later said another student witnessed Mangan touching her buttocks in class about a month before, police said.
Mangan, who has worked at the middle school for the last two years, was arrested and booked at the Inglewood Police Jail. Because of medical issues, he was transferred to the Los Angeles County Jail where he was held on $50,000 bail. He is expected to appear at Inglewood Municipal Court on Friday.

John Walter Hawthorne was, in the eyes of many, a dedicated teacher who helped migrant farmworkers’ children learn English and transition into Salinas schools. But Hawthorne, a Soquel resident, harbored a deep and twisted obsession for his female students, according to prosecutors. He abused his role as a trusted educator and molested 13 of his students– some as young as 10 years old. Hawthorne also took digital pictures of the students, and compulsively cut and pasted their faces onto pornographic images.
On Oct. 24 Monterey County Superior Court Judge Adrienne Grover sentenced Hawthorne to 10 years and eight months in prison for child molestation and possession of child pornography. Toward the close of the emotional sentencing, Grover said, “This is not the type of pornography case that exposed children to posing in sexualized ways. At the same time, there is a disturbing quality to the pornography count here because it was personalized to the victim.”

Former Peninsula High School coach Barry Sacks pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of child molestation and was sentenced to 60 days in jail. Sacks, 49, can serve the time in a city jail instead of a county facility, and will likely do so, his attorney said.
Sacks will also have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, serve 30 days of community service on a state Department of Transportation work crew and remain on probation for five years. At a later date, he is expected to be ordered to undergo 52 weeks of sex offender counseling, according to Deputy District Attorney Jodi Link, who heads the Torrance office's sex crimes unit.
In exchange for his plea, seven other counts against Sacks were dismissed by prosecutors. Sacks, a popular figure in the South Bay athletic community for decades, was arrested in July and later charged in Torrance Superior Court with nine misdemeanor counts of child molestation.
While the details of his crimes have never been made public, Link characterized his actions as "opportunistic." She said he touched the teens' breasts and buttocks over their clothing under the guise of directing them in their athletics during the 2007-08 school year.

Terry Zane arrived in a Federal courtroom wearing shackles. He entered a plea of "not guilty" to the two counts against him, distributing or being in receipt of child pornography, and possession of child pornography.
Zane was arrested in August after he took his computer to get repaired. Technicians reported to police finding images of child pornography. At the time, Zane worked as a band teacher at two Fresno elementary schools. He posted bond and was a free man until Thursday when he was re-arrested for the Federal charges.
His wife was in the courtroom today. The judge once again released Zane to her custody, pending the outcome of the case. If convicted of the Federal charges, Zane could face 30 years in prison.

An art teacher and former swim and water polo coach at Escondido High School was sentenced Wednesday to a year in jail and placed on three years probation for having sex with two underage female students.
Randy Nack, 33, pleaded guilty on July 1 to four felony charges, including having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor more than three years younger than the perpetrator.
He also pleaded guilty to oral copulation on a person under 18 and two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object.
Nack faced a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
Allegations of an unlawful sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl were raised on Jan, 17 and police started an investigation, according to Escondido police Lt. Bob Benton.
Nack surrendered on Feb. 28, and was subsequently charged with having unlawful sex with the second girl.
The defendant graduated from Escondido High in 1994 and joined the district as a teacher in 2004.

A former Helix High School business teacher and student body adviser who admitted having an inappropriate relationship with a student must serve 60 days in a work program where he spends his nights in a locked building, a Superior Court judge ruled Wednesday.
Jeff Wenham, 46, was also ordered by Judge Roderick Shelton to perform 20 days of community service and serve three years probation.
The judge also ordered Wenham to undergo counseling, which his lawyer, Earll Pott, said he has already started.
Wenham, who taught at the school for six years, pleaded guilty in September to misdemeanor charges of committing a lewd act in public and failing to report that another teacher was having sex with the same student, Deputy District Attorney John Philpott said.
The student, who is now 18, said in court she went to Wenham for advice on ending a sexual relationship she had with teacher Garry Lin Wilcox. Instead, Wenham struck up his own relationship with her that started with kissing when she was 17 and progressed to having sex when she turned 18.
Wilcox, 44, was sentenced to a year in jail and placed on probation for three years in August for having sex with the girl.
“I sought you out because I needed help and you took advantage of me,” she told Wenham in court. “All I wanted was your attention and your time. All I wanted was to talk to you.”
Wenham apologized for his actions, saying: “I certainly never intended to hurt anybody.”

Carlos D. Araiza, who was a Spanish teacher at Terra Nova High School, pleaded guilty in June to a count of receiving child pornography.

Two former Turlock Christian Schools teachers pleaded not guilty Wednesday to felony charges after being accused of trying to arrange group sex with a 16-year-old student by cell phone.
The husband-and-wife suspects -- Justin Northcutt, 27, and Amy Northcutt, 26 -- each were charged with one felony count of "harmful matter sent with intent of seduction of a minor."
The Northcutts will be back in court Dec. 17.
They were arrested June 2, shortly after the school year ended. The Northcutts are accused of sending messages and photos to the girl, Sheriff's Department spokesman Royjindar Singh said.

A 54-year-old history teacher at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento is suspected of having four female students dress up in revealing "military garb" for a photo shoot on school property, the second time he has been investigated for similar accusations at an area high school, authorities said.
Gregory Jackson Rayburn was booked into Sacramento County Jail on 15 counts of molesting a child under the age of 18 and two counts of sexual battery, according to jail records. All the charges are misdemeanors.

A former Los Angeles school dean pleaded no contest Monday to a charge of failing to turn over evidence related to an alleged unlawful sexual relationship between an underage student and a teacher.
Prosecutors had alleged that Alan Hubbard, 49, a dean at Foshay Learning Center in South Los Angeles, learned of an illicit relationship between a Foshay teacher and that teacher's former student. Instead of going to authorities, Hubbard allegedly hid a romantic scrapbook prepared by the girl and discouraged her from testifying against his colleague, Steve Thomas Rooney.
Rooney was subsequently arrested on molestation-related charges involving other girls at a different L.A. school a year later. He also faces charges in the Foshay case.
As part of a plea agreement, Judge Alex Ricciardulli sentenced Hubbard to three years' probation, 60 days of service on a road crew and $220 in fines. The government dropped a second charge of obstructing justice, which referred to Hubbard's alleged efforts to dissuade the girl from cooperating with police.

A former Carlsbad, Calif., teacher's aide has been sentenced to nearly eight years in prison on child pornography charges.
Michael N. Runnestrand, 26, is accused of enticing a 13-year-old girl over the Internet to engage in sexually explicit conduct and produce videos and still images of that conduct. The girl sent the videos and images to Runnestrand in California.
Runnestrand met the girl in 2003 when he was a teacher's assistant in her sixth-grade class in California. Her family later moved to Michigan.

A Roseville middle school teacher was formally charged on Friday with 14 counts of child sex abuse.
The alleged victim, who is now an adult, was a student at Buljan Middle School where James Albert Hirleman teaches.
Hirleman, 48, entered a not guilty plea to two counts of lewd or lascivious acts on a child under age 14; six counts of oral copulation of a person under 16 yrs old; four counts of lewd acts against someone under 15 and two acts of sodomy on a person under age 18.
According to the criminal complaint, "Between 1999 and 2005 James Hirleman performed oral sex, sodomy, lewd and lascvious behavior repeatedly about 20 times. His victim was in seventh grade and 13 years old until 18 years old. Abuse occurred primarily at (location)."
The complaint also read, "Under surveillance, James Hirleman made confessions to (victim) about performing oral sex from Hirleman to (victim)."
Rocklin police arrested Hirleman Wednesday night. Lt. Lon Milka says the alleged crimes took place in 2001 and 2006. He said said Hirleman came to the attention of police through information obtained during the arrest of another individual.

A former Berkeley Sea Scouts leader was sentenced Tuesday to six years in prison for molesting two boys aboard his boat in what authorities called a pattern of abuse - and an atmosphere of secrecy - that dated back at least three decades.
As Eugene Austin Evans, 65, of Kensington was led away in handcuffs from an Oakland courtroom, three rows of supporters stood in recognition, apparently refusing to accept his admission minutes earlier that he had been molesting boys on his boat, the SSS Farallon, for 30 years and warning them that "what happens on the boat stays on the boat."
Evans pleaded no contest in July to two counts of child molestation. Under a plea deal with Alameda County prosecutors, 12 other felony counts of child molestation and four misdemeanor counts of showing pornographic material to minors were dropped. Evans must register as a sex offender.

Los Angeles school officials transferred an assistant principal to a Watts middle school just months after he had been removed from a previous school where he was investigated for allegedly having sex with an underage student and pulling a gun on her stepfather.
Last week, the assistant principal, Steve Thomas Rooney, 39, allegedly molested a student at the new campus, Markham Middle School. He was arrested and charged with five counts of forcible lewd acts on a child, stemming from allegations that he sexually assaulted the 13-year-old girl March 1 and at least one other occasion.
Los Angeles Unified School District officials declined to comment Wednesday about how Rooney had been reassigned to Markham last fall, saying they are conducting an internal investigation and citing a policy barring them from speaking publicly about cases under those circumstances.
District policy requires officials to conduct their own investigation into employee misconduct regardless of whether the allegations result in criminal charges. Officials would not say Wednesday whether such an inquiry occurred in the earlier case.

Band teacher at Foshay Learning Center in Los Angeles was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on two felony counts of possession of material depicting a minor engaging in sexual conduct.
Los Angeles police served a search warrant June 4 at 28-year-old Lief Arnesen Albaugh's home and school and allegedly found pictures on both his personal and district-issued laptop computers.
Albaugh is one of three current or former Foshay staff members to be charged with sex-related felonies in recent months.
Administrator Steve Thomas Rooney, 39, is awaiting trial on felony sex-related counts involving a former Foshay student and two girls at Markham Middle School, where Rooney became an assistant principal after leaving Foshay.
Alan P. Hubbard, 49, a dean at Foshay Learning Center, is awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges of obstruction of justice and being an accessory after the fact for allegedly covering up Rooney's alleged affair with the former Forshay student.

The Corona-Norco Unified School District has placed one of its teachers on administrative leave after police arrested her on suspicion of having sex with a minor.
Wendie Estrada Fernandez, 45, of Corona, on Monday, is accused of having unlawful sexual intercourse and oral sex with a 17-year-old high school boy in the Corona-Norco Unified School District, according to reports.
Fernandez, a fifth-grade teacher at Corona Ranch Elementary School and mother of four children, was released after posting $25,000 bail, police said. She knew the boy through someone in her family, said Jerry Pawluczenko, a sergeant with the Corona Police Department.
Fernandez was placed on "indefinite administrative leave" Tuesday and replaced with a "highly qualified" substitute teacher, said Tom Pike, the district's assistant superintendent for executive services. Fernandez's year-round class started the second week in July.

For the third time this summer, police have arrested a man who allegedly pursued an underage girl online to meet her for sex.
The case against Gerald William Lemay, 46, a substitute teacher in Butte County, is similar to that of a San Jose band instructor arrested in August and a plumber from San Jose busted in May.
Like the two prior cases, Lemay initiated a chat room conversation then arranged to travel to Santa Cruz to have sex with who he thought was a 13-year-old girl, according to Santa Cruz police. She was actually a Santa Cruz police detective.
"I think it just brings out the inherent danger that hopefully parents can be made aware of and monitor their child's activity on these Internet Web sites... because these conversations can really turn dangerous," Santa Cruz police Lt. Rudy Escalante said. "We need to be aware that, unfortunately, these predators are out there." Lemay started chatting with the detective posing as a teenage girl in August, according to Butte County sheriff's detective Tom Dryden, who is assigned to the Special Victims Unit and assisted with the investigation. Escalante said the conversations were "very sexually explicit."

A Cajon High School science teacher has been arrested on suspicion of giving lewd materials to one of his former students and sexually harassing the minor, school district officials said Tuesday.
Luis Gonzalo Torner, 25, was arrested Sunday in Redlands and booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. "Due to the seriousness of the allegations, he has been placed on (paid) administrative leave," said San Bernardino City Unified School District spokeswoman Linda Bardere.
School district police began investigating the case Friday after someone made allegations against the teacher, Bardere said.
Police came to Redlands about 11:30 a.m. Sunday and arrested him on suspicion of distributing lewd materials to a minor, contacting a minor with the intent to commit a sex act and annoying and molesting a minor. District officials withheld most information about the victim, including the gender and age, but did say the victim was a student in Toner's biology class during the 2007-08 school year. Toner allegedly harassed the student after the school year ended, Bardere said. The student, who is still underage, is attending a different school in the district this year. Marco Herrera was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison for having sex with a 14 year old girl.

A former Alisal Union School District teacher pleaded guilty Thursday to eight counts of child molestation, the Monterey County District Attorney's Office said.
From 2003 through early 2007, John Walter Hawthorne, 43, molested "a number of students" at two elementary schools - Martin Luther King Jr. Academy and Virginia Rocca Barton Elementary School, the District Attorney's Office said.
He was teaching at Martin Luther King Jr. Academy when he was arrested in April 2007.
“I know there were meetings with the victims’ families, and the disposition reached was to (their) satisfaction,” said Stephanie Hulsey, a county assistant district attorney. “Their primary concern was not to go through a trial.”
The investigation into Hawthorne began when four children at the school approached a counselor, prosecutors said.
Investigators learned that Hawthorne, besides inappropriately touching more students, also possessed “hundreds of images of child pornography” in a computer seized from his Soquel home, prosecutors said.
The District Attorney’s Office said he had morphed photographs of his students face onto these images. Hawthorne also pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography.

Officials said Spring Valley resident Gary Wilcox, 44, was arrested Sunday night. He is accused of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a female student. Investigators said the geography teacher and soccer coach had sex with the girl, who is now 18, at least once in a hotel room more than a year ago.

Former Empire Academy teacher Forest Cascade Miles will be released on his own recognizance but will be placed on house arrest and forced to wear an ankle bracelet, a Santa Cruz judge ruled Tuesday.
Miles, who has pleaded not guilty to charges that he had sexual relations with two teenage students, likely will be released Thursday to live with his mother out of the county. Judge Jeff Almquist ruled that Miles, who has been accepted to the spring semester at San Jose State where he planned to study applied physics, will be allowed to attend classes.
Eleven members of Miles's family and friends appeared in court Tuesday morning as did his newly-hired attorney Lisa McCain. He will be back in court Oct. 6 for a preliminary hearing. In the meantime he is allowed no contact with the victims or their families.
Miles taught science for four years at Empire Academy, a small private school in Santa Cruz that serves students grades 6-12. He was arrested last week at his Santa Clara home on suspicion of sexual assault and molestation.

Former Bell High School teacher Alex Diaz, 37, has pleaded guilty to six sex-related charges and no contest to two other charges involving a 17-year-old female student. Diaz was sentenced to 180 days in jail and five years formal probation. Diaz was arrested last May and released on $20,000 bail.

A high school music teacher was sentenced today to 90 days in jail after being convicted of molesting a 16-year-old student in his campus office. Bijon Savero Watson, 40, of Santa Ana will also be on formal probation for five years and will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. He was convicted of three misdemeanor counts of annoyance for molesting the student on May 22.
Watson was the director for the jazz program at the Orange County School of the Arts, a middle and high school combination campus in Santa Ana. He met the victim through the music program when she was 12. In October 2006, when the victim was 16, Watson kissed and fondled her in his office. He later asked her to orally copulate him in his office and sent text messages to her about engaging in sexual conversations.

A former Enterprise High School teacher has been charged with one count of misdemeanor annoyance or molestation of a child for alleged inappropriate correspondence with a 17-year-old student.
Stephanie Beaucar, 36, will be notified of the charge by the Shasta County district attorney's office, assistant district attorney Ben Hannah said.
"We have the case under review," he said.
The notification requires her to check herself into the Shasta County jail, at which time she'll be given a date to appear in court.

A former Evergreen band and music teacher was sentenced today to 15 years to life in prison for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student.
William Robert Eisenman, 33, was convicted in June of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust as a pattern of conduct and providing alcohol to a minor. Testimony was presented during trial of 21 sexual acts between Eisenman and the girl, a student at Evergreen High School, between March 1, 2007, and May 18, 2007, including at the school, in his car, in his home and at two motels.
Eisenman was found not guilty of unlawful sexual contact for touching the breast of another Evergreen High student, who was 18. "There's no words to convey how sorry, how incredibly sorry I am," Eisenman told Jefferson County District Judge Tamara Russell before she passed sentence. Eisenman apologized to the two teenagers, saying he hopes they will recover "from this mess."

A Breckenridge Middle School teacher will not contest seven charges of criminal sexual conduct.
Donita Brady on Monday entered pleas of no contest to seven counts of gross indecency between females, the Mount Pleasant Morning Sun reported. Gratiot County Circuit Judge Randy L. Tahvonen will sentence the 50-year-old physical education teacher Monday, Oct. 20.
Brady was scheduled for a Wednesday, Sept. 3, trial on five counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, which involves penetration, and two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, which involves touching. A no contest plea means the defendant accepts punishment without admitting guilt. Brady, who lives in Breckenridge, worked as a physical education teacher in the district for 27 years. The 15-year-old victim and her parents filed a complaint with the Breckenridge Police Department on March 2 for incidents she said took place between September and February.

No criminal charges will be brought against a 35-year-old Indio High School math teacher arrested two months ago on suspicion of sexually battering a female student, the Riverside County District Attorney's Office announced Friday.
Timothy Goerzen of La Quinta was arrested at about 7:30 a.m. June 9 on the high school campus following an investigation conducted by Indio police detectives, who had recommended that a sexual battery charge be filed.
Goerzen posted $25,000 bail that day, and was instructed to appear in court this Monday.
“After a complete review of the facts and circumstances surrounding the case, we have declined to file charges,” said Michael Jeandron, a spokesman for the district attorney's office. “The reason for this decision is based on the lack of sufficient evidence to warrant such a filing.”
Ben Guitron, spokesman for the Indio Police Department, said late Friday he had not been officially notified by the district attorney's office regarding the decision, and planned to “look into the matter further” with the detective bureau.

A teacher from Castle Park High School in Chula Vista has been arrested on suspicion of molesting a 16-year-old female student at the school, authorities said Friday. Chula Vista police spokesman Bernard Gonzales said Armando Rodriguez, 34, surrendered to authorities at the South Bay courthouse in Chula Vista on Wednesday, the same day a warrant was issued for his arrest.

A Daly City high school counselor was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old student she met at summer church camp, according to prosecutors who said the woman had naked photos of the girl on her cell phone.
Melody Ybona Gawliu, 24, pleaded no contest to one count of oral copulation with a minor in return for no more than a year in jail. She will not have to register as a sex offender.
Gawliu worked as a teacher’s aide at El Camino High School in South San Francisco when, between Sept. 1, 2007 and Jan. 25, she engaged in a romantic relationship with a teen student she met that summer while serving as a counselor, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Teachers reported the situation to Child Protective Services after becoming suspicious of Gawliu after she brought balloons to school for the girl’s 17th birthday and Daly City police reported finding nude photos of the girl on Gawliu’s phone as well as a text message telling the girl to say to authorities nothing happened between them.

A judge hands down the punishment for a former Central Coast high school teacher convicted of molesting a teenage student.

Eduardo Arturo Serrano, 56, a fifth-grade teacher at Valle Lindo Elementary School in Chula Vista, California has been arrested on suspicion of molesting a 6-year-old female family member.
The sexual assault is alleged to have occurred late last week in Serrano’s home.

A 60-year-old school principal was arrested Thursday on suspicion of owning child pornography on his home computer, according to authorities. Randolph Barnett Cornfield, of Playa del Rey, was arrested just before noon with "several images of child pornography" found on his personal computer, according to Capt. Former Homestead High School teacher Robb Hunt was sentenced to one year in Santa Clara County Jail and five years of probation for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old Lynbrook High School student.
Hunt, 31, pleaded no contest in February to four felony counts of sexual acts with a minor and one misdemeanor count of child annoyance. Judge Kenneth Barnum ruled that because Hunt had demonstrated remorse and a will to turn his life around, including attending counseling, he did not send him to state prison as proscribed by law.

Pablo Rios Fregoso of El Monte, a 53-year-old custodian at La Primaria Elementary School, was arrested on suspicion of fondling a third-grader at the school in April. Fregoso is suspected of fondling a third-grade female student at La Primaria Elementary School, which is located in El Monte at 4220 Gilman Road, El Monte police Detective Ernie Cramer told the Whittier Daily News.
The school's principal, Aileen La Corte, told the newspaper that the girl was approached during a recess period on April 25 and said that she had been touched inappropriately.
"We began to conduct our investigation and it was reported to Child Protective Services and the El Monte Police Department," La Corte told the Daily News. "We immediately took action, as mandated by state law."

An Indio High School teacher was arrested Tuesday in connection to alleged sexual conduct on a student. Timothy Goerzen, 35, of La Quinta, was arrested in connection to alleged sexual battery of a student that took place Friday, June 6, Ben Guitron with Indio Police said. Goerzen was arrested and booked into the Indio Jail Monday where he posted $25,000 bail.
According to Superintendent Dr. Sharon McGehee, the student alleging the assault told a friend, and that friend told her parents. They then contacted the school principal.

A former Lake Elsinore high school teacher who seduced her 15-year-old female student was sentenced Friday for committing a lewd act on a child, and her twin sister and the twin's girlfriend were also sentenced for being accessories. Munoz had been free on bail but was led away in handcuffs. Before pleading guilty she had been charged with two counts of committing lewd acts on a minor and faced up to six years in prison.
Her twin sister, Antonia Munoz-Juvera, who taught chemistry at Lakeside High, and the twin's girlfriend, Eileen Valerio, 19, pleaded guilty to being accessories to a crime, a misdemeanor. They were sentenced to four months in jail on a work release program and three years probation for helping arrange to have the girl spend the night with Franca.

A band teacher at Foshay Learning Center in Los Angeles was charged Thursday with possessing child pornography on his personal laptop computer, authorities said.
Lief Arnesen Albaugh was arrested Wednesday evening by detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department's juvenile division. The 27-year-old Los Angeles man posted $20,000 bail and was released at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department inmate website.
Investigators found pornographic images of girls and boys on his laptop, which police seized from his home, said Jane Robison, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. She would not elaborate.

A federal jury found Michael Joseph Pepe guilty of seven counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places. The federal law targets people who go overseas for so-called child sex tourism.
During trial, six girls who were between 9 and 12 at the time of the abuse testified that Pepe drugged, bound, beat and raped them. Pepe was arrested in Phnom Penh in 2006 by Cambodian police investigating the sexual abuse allegations.

A former substitute teacher and volunteer basketball coach was sentenced to 16 months in state prison Friday for having a 15-year-old boy perform oral sex on him at school last semester.
Dionn Holton, 32, read a brief statement to the court apologizing for his actions early Friday before he was sentenced to the minimum term by Judge Arthur Jean. The married father of four had faced a maximum of three years, eight months.

A former Silverado teacher was sentenced to the maximum prison term Friday for having sex with a 17-year-old student in 2001. Mark Anthony Lizama, 44, pleaded with Superior Court Judge Eric Nakata to sentence him to probation only, since he said he has parents that depend on him and a fiancé that he was getting ready to marry.
Lizama was sentenced to three years and eight months in state prison, the maximum sentence.

A former teacher who pleaded no contest to sex-related charges involving four special education students was sentenced Wednesday to three years in state prison. Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Henry J. Hall denied probation for 60-year-old Fred David Johnson, noting that the crimes involved a "breach" of trust involving "particularly vulnerable" victims entrusted to his care.
Johnson pleaded no contest Jan. 30 to one felony count of oral copulation of an incompetent person involving a 14-year-old boy. Eve Victoria Pierson, 37, of Temecula, has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of annoying or molesting a child under the age of 18, according to Riverside County Superior Court records.
Court documents show there were notes and text messages exchanged between Pierson and the two teens and that she kissed at least one of the alleged victims.
Pierson has been employed by the Temecula Valley Unified School District since August 2000 and had been a teacher at Rancho Vista High since January 2007, district spokeswoman Melanie Norton said.

Jury deliberations will resume today in a case brought against Los Angeles Unified by a former Woodland Hills high school student who alleges that campus officials knew about her sexual relationship with her assistant swim coach and did not report it.
Dagny B., now 20, filed the lawsuit against the LAUSD and former assistant coach David Johnson in Los Angeles Superior Court in March 2005, alleging negligence and emotional distress.
Johnson was arrested in July 2004 and later sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years probation after pleading no contest to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.

A math teacher at Pete Knight High School in Palmdale has been arrested on suspicion of engaging in sexual intercourse with a student in April 2004.
Gregg Donahue, 29, was taken into custody at his home in the 2000 block of West Avenue H-6 in around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Lancaster by detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Special Victims Bureau.
The arrest stemmed from allegations by a former high school student who reported last Thursday that she had a sexual relationship with Donahue -- a Pete Knight High math teacher and track coach -- in April 2004, he said.

Shelisa Marie Nuzum, 24, a former teacher's aide accused of sending flirtatious messages and letting an 11-year-old boy inappropriately touch her over her clothing.
She sentenced Friday to six months in jail and ordered to be on formal probation for three years. We think she should be sentenced to 6 months on the front line in Iraq.
Nuzum, was also ordered, to register as a sex offender for life. We all know that registering someone as a sex offender will not stop them from abusing our children.
Nuzum, who has resigned as a teacher's aide at Pacheco Elementary School in Redding as part of a plea bargain, must also participate in a treatment program for sex offenders.

SAN DIEGO – A teacher at a county juvenile probation camp school convicted of possessing child pornography was sentenced to three years in prison.
Edgardo Vilas, 42, of Descanso, pleaded guilty in February and admitted his computer contained more than 600 images of minors, some as young as 6, engaged in sexually explicit acts.
Vilas taught at Rancho del Campo, a county-run detention camp in Campo for juvenile offenders. Besides the prison time, Vilas will also serve five years probation and have to register as a sex offender.
According to court records, agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement learned of Vilas in November when they linked his e-mail address with a subscription to a Web site that allowed users to view and download child pornography.

A math teacher and freshman baseball coach at Corona's Centennial High School is suspected of molesting for more than 10 years a boy he met at his church, Corona police said Wednesday.
Richard Angulo, 34, of Corona, was being held on $1 million bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center on two counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a child younger than 14 and two counts of continued sexual abuse of a child younger than 14, jail records show.
Angulo was arrested Monday and posted $150,000 bail, jail records show. A bail enhancement order was issued Tuesday, which led to his second arrest and his bail being increased to $1 million. Angulo was scheduled to be arraigned today in Superior Court in Riverside.

A first-grade teacher at Lynwood's Lincoln Elementary School pleaded "guilty as charged" Monday to a single felony count of possession of child pornography. "I willfully downloaded child pornography," Kenneth Edward Kothe said upon entering his plea before U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper in downtown Los Angeles. Kothe, 61, of Alhambra, was arrested Nov. 28 in connection with a federal Internet child porn probe. Lynwood school district officials placed him on unpaid administrative leave shortly after his arrest.
Kothe, who is currently free on $50,000 bond, is scheduled to be sentenced July 14. He faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine, but his plea agreement calls for a term of between 51 and 63 months in jail. Kothe will also be required to register as a sex offender. On Kothe's computer hard drive, seized from his Alhambra home, investigators found 114 image files and 13 movie files of prepubescent girls .

A former Richmond high school girls' soccer coach is being held without bail today after police arrested him Wednesday for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old girl, officials said.
Richmond police Sgt. Brian Dickerson said Ivan Chavez, 24, was arrested on a $200,000 warrant.

A former Marin schoolteacher charged last year with having sexual relations with two Redwood High School teenagers pleaded guilty Wednesday in a deal with prosecutors.
Amy Lee Kelly, 41, of Benicia pleaded guilty to one felony count of oral copulation of a person under 18 years old and one misdemeanor count of battery. She faces up to three years in prison when she is sentenced June 11 before Judge Faye D'Opal.
Kelly was initially charged with two counts of lewd acts upon a child and one count of unlawful sexual intercourse, but prosecutors amended those counts in the plea bargain. Kelly could have faced more than four years in prison under the original charges.
Kelly was charged last August in connection with a gathering at the Corte Madera home of one of her friends. Authorities said Kelly was heavily intoxicated and engaged in sexual activity with two 15-year-old Redwood High School students who were friends of the homeowner's 15-year-old daughter.

A former West Hills High School teacher was sentenced to 180 days in jail Wednesday and placed on three years' probation for having sex with a
17-year-old girl who was a student and teacher's aide in his classes.
“I can't express the guilt and the shame and the remorse I feel,” John C. Holler told El Cajon Superior Court Judge Patricia K. Cookson. “I want to apologize to the victim and her wonderful family.”
Holler, 41, pleaded guilty Feb. 21 to one felony count of rape with a foreign object in connection with a sexual relationship he had with the girl from August through November. In exchange for the guilty plea, a second charge of rape with a foreign object and two counts of attending or arranging a meeting with a minor were dismissed.
The judge said Holler can serve his jail time in a work-furlough program which he can leave during the day to go to work, but said he can no longer work in an educational setting where he has contact with minors.

Former Platina Elementary School teacher and principal Craig Lee has struck a deal with the Sonoma County district attorney's office to settle child pornography charges brought against him last year.
Lee, 54, will plead no contest to one of 13 charges stemming from the discovery of a stash of child pornography images found in his Petaluma home last April, said Joan Risse, Sonoma County chief deputy district attorney.
Lee left Platina Elementary School two years ago to take over as superintendent of the Lagunitas School District in Marin County. He was dismissed from that job after his arrest last year. Petaluma police said they discovered Lee's collection of child pornography when officers responded to a domestic violence call last April at his residence. There they found "over a hundred printed depictions" of adults performing various sex acts with young children, officers reported.

A former high school basketball coach and substitute teacher will have to serve five months in the Sacramento County Jail and register as a sex offender. Kevin Lee Coe, 28, was sentenced this morning.
He was given a three-year suspended sentence after being convicted of two counts of misdemeanor annoying and molesting a minor. According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Coe was accused of seeking sex with one of his basketball players, a 16-year-old boy, during the 2005-2006 school year. The victim eventually came forward to authorities.

A former Goleta school teacher has been sentenced in a Ventura Courtroom to 3 years in prison for molesting a former student. Martin Corral was charged with committing lewd acts upon a child between July of 2005 and July of 2007. The victim was an 8 year old boy who was a student of Corral's while he taught at an elementary school in Oxnard. Corral had developed a trusting relationship with the child's family and had been asked to be the boy's god-father at the time of the abuse. Ventura County District Attorney Catherine Voelker, told KEY News over the phone, she was seeking the maximum sentence of 8 years in prison based on the fact that Corral was an educator and he is obligated to alert authorities if he believes a student is experiencing sexual abuse.
Amid arguments from the prosecution, the presiding judge handed down a sentence of only 3 years in prison, a sentence he felt was justified because of the defendants guilty plea he made early on in the case. Prosecutor Catherine Voelker firmly disagreed with the judge's decision and said, "the defendant should serve the maximum sentence of 8 years because the ramifications of the abuse and broken trust outweigh the early resolution of this case."

A former Silverado teacher was found guilty Thursday of having sex with a 17-year-old student.
Mark Anthony Lizamo, 44, of Adelanto, could face up to three years and eight months in state prison after being found guilty of sexual intercourse and oral copulation with a minor.
“It was a long time coming but justice has finally been served for the victim,” said Deputy District Attorney Kathleen DiDonato. Lizamo was kissing his rosary while the verdict was read and then was ordered into custody by Superior Court Judge Eric Nakata with a $1 million bond.
Nakata remanded Lizamo — who was out of custody — because he was concerned about the safety of the witnesses who testified against the teacher. The trial lasted just two days and the jury rendered a verdict after just a day and a half of deliberations. Lizamo picked up a 17-year-old girl down the street from her house and took her into the desert in Adelanto,according to testimony. After she performed oral sex on him, he had sex with her.

A special education teacher at Griffith Middle School in Los Angeles has been arrested on suspicion of possessing child pornography, an FBI spokeswoman said today. Ivan Carcelen, 56, was taken into custody Tuesday evening at his Glendale home by agents and officers with the FBI's Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Team.
FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said Carcelen was arrested without incident and that agents recovered thousands of images of children, many of them classified as child pornography.
Eimiller said that it did not appear that any of the children depicted in the images were students at the school, nor had they recovered any evidence that he had molested children.
The investigation that snared Carcelen was initiated months ago by FBI agents in San Francicso. Carcelen was identified as a subscriber to a child pornography website, Eimiller said. Carcelen has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, she said.

A grand jury indicted a former American Hebrew Academy teacher, who's also a rabbi.
The jury indicted Rabbi David Alan Stein last week on eight counts of engaging in sexual activity with a student.
Police say Stein had sex at least eight times with the 16-year-old. They believe most of the sexual encounters happened on school property.
Police charged Stein in October. He posted $50 bond and returned to California where he is now living. The school fired Stein last spring when the allegations surfaced.

The Hudson Falls teacher and coach who was arrested earlier this month for allegedly having sex with one of his students has been indicted on 21 charges that accuse him of having sex with an underage student 20 times between 2005 and 2007. Kason M. O’Neil faces 14 felonies and seven misdemeanors in an indictment handed up Thursday by a Washington County grand jury. It includes five counts of statutory rape and nine counts accusing him of having oral sex with the girl, who was 14 and 15 years old. His legal troubles may not be confined to Washington County Court, however.
Police said they have evidence he had sex with the girl at his former home in Saratoga County as well, which may lead to charges there. Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy acknowledged Thursday that he had been contacted by State Police to be made aware of an investigation into allegations O’Neil may have had improper contact with the same girl in Saratoga County. O'Neil, 26, of Scotia teaches physical education in Hudson Falls and has coached the girls and boys varsity track teams for three years. The girl who was accused him was a member of the track team.
