Mohamed Dirshe

A former Leavenworth substitute teacher and high school basketball coach has pleaded not guilty to unlawful sexual relations with students.
The plea from Mohamed A. Dirshe, 26, followed a preliminary hearing Wednesday during which two teenage boys testified Dirshe had sexual relations with them while they were under the influence of alcohol.
Leavenworth County District Court Judge Gunnar Sundby ruled the evidence presented during the hearing met the standard necessary to have the case bound over for arraignment.
“Judge we can do arraignment today. He’s pleading not guilt to every count,” said Dirshe’s attorney, KiAnn McBratney.

Floyd M. Rogers Jr.
11-29-08
A former Basehor Elementary School teacher has pleaded no contest to three counts of attempted aggravated indecent liberties with children, according to authorities.
Floyd M. Rogers Jr. of Bonner Springs entered the plea Wednesday in Leavenworth County District Court. A trial for those charges had been scheduled for next week.
Rogers initially was charged with three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child under 14 years of age. However, each count was amended to attempted aggravated indecent liberties as part of the plea agreement, District Attorney Frank Kohl said Friday.
Rogers is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 9. He is being held in custody while he awaits sentencing. Because Rogers has no prior criminal history, Kohl said he would not oppose the judge granting probation in the case. The parents of the victims also said they would favor probation, he said.
Authorities said Rogers inappropriately touched three female students while working as a fifth-grade teacher at Basehor Elementary School. The crimes occurred during the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 school years. Rogers later left the Basehor-Linwood School District after being placed on administrative leave, school officials said at the time.
The criminal charges stemmed from Rogers touching the outside of the victims’ clothing while inside the classroom and other students were present. However, the students in the classroom were not aware of what was going, Kohl said.

Richard Young
10-17-08
A Reno County jury has found a former high school debate coach and teacher guilty of sex crimes.
The jury found Richard Young guilty of three counts of taking indecent liberties. The verdict was announced after 4:00 p.m. After their verdict, prosecutor Keith Schroeder asked the judge to allow the jury to go back into deliberations in order to decide whether to give the judge permission to sentence Young to more time in prison than state guidelines call for.
Shortly after 5 p.m., the jury came back out and announced that they believe the judge should be allowed to sentence Young to more prison time than he normally would be allowed to do. Young was accused of sexually abusing a 15-year-old foreign exchange student who was staying at his home last year.
Last week, the student testified that Young touched him inappropriately on two occasions. Young's three step-sons also testified for the prosecution that Young abused them hundreds of times when they were younger.
Wednesday, several former students and former exchange students testified in defense of Young. All of those who testified said Young never did anything inappropriate. Erik Mok who lived with Young for 7 years as an exchange student said Young never did anything inappropriate.

David Hazlett

A former Johnson County teacher has been sentenced to more than four years for using a computer to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity.
David Hazlett, 58, of Olathe, pleaded guilty in federal court in February to one count of using a computer to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity.
In his plea, Hazlett admitted that on Jan. 20, 2003, he chatted with two minor girls via web cam. He asked them to undress and show themselves to the camera, which they did. He saved the web cam images to the hard drive of his computer.
During that incident, he was posing as a boy named Ely. The crime was discovered in July 2007 when an apartment manager called the Johnson County Sheriff's Department to report that child pornography had been found on the computer in Hazlett's apartment. Hazlett had left the computer and other personal items behind when was evicted.

Coen C. Potts
09-09-08
Former Auburn-Washburn USD 437 elementary art teacher Coen Potts this afternoon was sentenced to more than seven years in jail for possessing thousands of images of child pornography.
U.S. District Court Judge Julie Robinson trimmed a year off the recommended sentenced agreed to by Potts’ defense attorney and prosecutors as part of a plea deal. In June, Potts pled guilty to one count of receiving child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography.
Robinson said that Potts showed remorse and a desire to change. But the judge said she remained troubled that he had worked so closely with young children, that he had possessed marijuana on school grounds and that he was found with adult and child pornography as well as marijuana while awaiting trial.
Significant jail time, Robinson said, was required. She said she couldn’t forget about the children victimized in the photos and videos even if Potts hadn’t committed those acts. Consumers of child pornography, she said, help create a demand for such harmful actions.

Tabitha Adams

A former Dodge City teacher has been sentenced to a "hard 25" life sentence for taking indecent liberties with an 8-year-old girl. District Judge Van Hampton sentenced Tabatha Adams, 36, Thursday to life in prison without possibility of parole for 25 years, said Ford County Assistant County Attorney David Belling.
Adams pleaded guilty in March to one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. She was arrested in December after someone found explicit digital pictures of Adams and her boyfriend, 28-year-old Zachary Noble, of Falls City, Neb., and turned them over to the police.
Adams was a second-grade teacher at Sacred Heart Catholic School at the time. The victim was a student at the school, but not 1 of Adams' students. Adams later resigned.
She also faces charges in Nebraska, where the crimes are alleged to have occurred.
