A local high school teacher charged with sexual abuse of a student pleaded not guilty today.
 
Investigators say 34-year-old Jason Neelley had inappropriate sexual contact with a 17-year-old student.

Neelley was a biology teacher at Lone Oak High School. He is charged under Kentucky's new law that makes it a felony for anyone in a position of authority to have sex with someone under the age of 18.

Neelley's attorney, Andrew Coiner says that law may not apply to his client. "One of the points of contention here is whether this man was in a position of authority over this young lady.  The law is new in that regard, It will be unique.  It will be different.  We'll just have to see where it leads us."

A grand jury in Lexington has indicted a former junior high school science teacher on sex charges dating back to the 1970s involving two students.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported 61-year-old Jack Russell Hubbard was indicted Monday on four charges of first-degree sodomy and one count of first-degree rape.

The charges come after a man and a woman alleged Hubbard abused them when they were teenagers.

Hubbard was initially arrested in July 2007. He is free on bond.

He was charged after Carol Lynne Maner testified in a lawsuit she filed against the Fayette County School Board, claiming the board ignored a pattern of sexual abuse by school employees. She won a $3.9 million verdict, which is being appealed.

The Associated Press does not typically identify the victims in alleged sex crimes. But Maner's lawyer Chris Miller said she is willing to be named in conjunction with the case because she wanted her allegations to be public.

A volunteer at Reidland High School faces first-degree sexual abuse charges after police say he admitted to having a relationship with a 14-year-old girl.

Police arrested Justin T. Shoulta, 20, after received an anonymous tip call about an innappropriate relationship.

Shoulta volunteered as a band booster for the Reidland High School Band and the girl was a member.

"Justin T. Shoulta volunteered as a band booster to load and unload instruments and/ or occasionally worked in the concession stand at band competitions for the Fall 2008 marching season which ended Nov. 7, 2008," said Cheryl Lawson, director of public relations at McCracken County Schools.  "Shoulta has never been assigned nor completed any official or supervisory duties for the Reidland High School band or for Reidland High School."

Police say he admitted to having inappropriate sexual contact with the girl during the Thanksgiving holiday break.

A federal grand jury has indicted a former Jefferson County Public Schools teacher on child pornography charges.

Ronald Borman, 61, faces charges he violated federal child exploitation laws, said United States Attorney David Huber on Thursday.

Huber said the investigation started in 2006 when an undercover detective posing as a child in Florida struck up an Internet relationship with Borman. "They not only chatted on the Internet, but the defendant allegedly got on a web cam nude and started discussing sex with this juvenile," Huber said. He said Florida detectives then notified Louisville Metro Police about Borman. "They did an investigation. He was interviewed, arrested, they searched his apartment, at which time they found a number of still images and a video of children, ages four to six...involved in sex acts with children and adults as well."

A former Bullitt County teacher and coach was indicted on charges of rape and sodomy today after a former student alleged they had sexual relations 15 years ago, a Kentucky State Police spokesman said.

Larry Brent Childress, 40, was arrested in Bullitt County about 3 p.m. today after a months-long investigation led to the indictment, Trooper Steve Pavey said.

An adult female came to state police and said that Childress had forced her to have sex with him when she was a juvenile and he was a coach at North Bullitt High School, Pavey said.

"The alleged incidents did not occur at school or on school property," he said.

Pavey said it is not uncommon for juveniles who are the victims of sexual abuse to come forward years later.

"A lot of people, when they're younger, they may be afraid or they think they did something wrong," he said.

A Brandon Rousey, 23, an assistant coach and teacher’s aide at Madison Middle School in Richmond, Kentucky has been arrested on allegations that he sent text messages to a 13-year-old girl, allegedly trying to coerce her into sexual activity.

Rousey was employed by Eastern Kentucky University through the AmeriCorps job placement program and had been working as a teachers aide and assistant volleyball coach at the middle school for about a year.

Rousey came to the attention of authorities by way of complaints from parents who said a school employee was sending sexually suggestive text messages to their daughters. It is alleged that Rousey sent text messages to several 13- and 14-year-old girls.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson indicates that their investigation “has proved elicit materials on one thus far and that insinuations have been made to others.” The Sheriff’s Department indicates that there is no evidence that there was any sexual contact between Rousey and the alleged victim.

Following his arrest, Rousey was being held in the Madison County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond with arraignment set for Wednesday.

A 70-year-old Covington teacher has been sentenced to 104 months in prison for obtaining child pornography. James Chase, of Ludlow, taught at Two Rivers Middle School. In July of 2008, he entered a guilty plea and admitted that he used his computer to download more than 3,000 images of child pornography.

Attorneys say the images included depictions of minors under the age of 12 engaged in sexual conduct, as well as images of sadistic and violent conduct. A United States District Court judge sentenced Chase in Fort Mitchell on Monday. Under federal law, he must serve 85% of his prison sentence. Chase will then have to be on probation for the rest of his life, as well as register as a sex offender.

Michael Colvett

A former band director accused of having a sexual relationship with a student is sentenced to two years probation.

Michael Colvett, a former band director at Marshall County High School took a plea deal in April. He will not serve any jail time but must register as a sex offender.

James B. Skaggs

A former teacher was sent to prison for four years today for sodomizing an eighth grade student in a class he taught three decades ago in Hardin County. In April, a Jefferson Circuit Court jury found James B. Skaggs guilty of four counts of third degree sodomy for having a relationship with a 13-year-old student at Skaggs’ home in Jefferson County.

At the time, Skaggs was a teacher at West Point Independent School in Hardin County.
The relationship started in the fall of 1977 and continued through 1978, according to court records. Skaggs later became superintendent of the Cloverport schools in Breckinridge County.

The victim called Skaggs a few years ago, recorded the conversation and then took the tape to police, said Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jon Heck. Skaggs initially admitted some of the allegations to police, but later recanted, Heck said.

Kevin Holladay, 42, is facing charges of sexual abuse and unlawful transaction with a minor. His wife, 34-year-old Marta Holladay, is charged with assaulting the teen on school property.

According to an arrest warrant, Kevin Holladay is accused of kissing a 15-year-old student and attempting to take off her clothes.

Coombs said it came to a head on school property when Marta Holladay grabbed the student by the hair, screamed obscenities at the teen and then pushed her. She now faces misdemeanor assault charges.

A recently resigned school teacher is facing charges for an inappropriate relationship with a female student.

Kentucky State Police arrested a teacher who recently resigned from the Hickman County High School.  Mark Morris was arrested and charged with five counts of Unlawful Transaction with a Minor 3rd degree after State Police conducted an investigation into an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old female student. 

Police say they received a complaint from the student’s father alleging that Morris was having an inappropriate relationship with his daughter after discovering over 200 text messages on her phone from the teacher.  During the investigation, it was revealed that Morris purchased cigarettes for the student on at least five separate occasions.  Police say Morris was delivering the cigarettes to the student on school property during school hours.

A former teacher Robertson County teacher who plead guilty to charges involving sexual contact with a student was sentenced to 6 five-year terms behind bars Monday.

Crystal Wells, 33, was suspended from her job as a math teacher at Deming High School when she was indicted for having a relationship with a 15-year-old male student. She later resigned.

Wells eventually took a plea deal to reduce her charges from rape to unlawful transaction with a minor.

The six five-year sentences are to be served concurrently.

Police in Elizabethtown have charged a teacher at Central Hardin High School with first-degree sexual abuse.

Arrest records show Brian Keith Walters was arrested Friday on a warrant accusing him of fondling a 9-year-old child in January and February. Walters posted bond Monday afternoon. Hardin County's District Court Clerk's office did not have an attorney listed for Walters.

A Kentucky State Police detective provided information leading to the arrest warrant. Spokesman Dick Thornton of the Hardin County Schools said Walters is a health and physical education teacher who previously coached volleyball, football and girls' track and field at Elizabethtown High School.

Mark D. Yarmey, 52, of Louisville, has been indicted by a grand jury in Louisville for sodomy and use of a minor in a sexual performance.

The two felony counts stem from an incident that allegedly happened nine years ago with an 11-year-old girl. The now 20-year-old victim said in the police report that her mother stood by as Yarmey took nude photographs of her.

She said her mother then left, leaving her with Yarmey, who forced her to perform oral sex on him.

At his arraignment earlier this month, Yarmey — who teaches electronics technology at Prosser School of Technology — pled not guilty to the charges. He remains on paid leave from the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp. A pretrial conference is set for June 23 and the tentative trial date is scheduled for Nov. 12.

Lincoln Shane Bentley was arrested yesterday, after Kentucky State Police opened an investigation stemming from a disturbing accusation made by one of his students.A student claims Bentley told her that he would give her a higher grade if she showed him her breasts.

Bentley pled not guilty to two counts of official misconduct. He has been ordered not to be on East Ridge school grounds or have contact with any students.

A western Kentucky high school band director has been charged with misdemeanor unlawful transaction with a minor. Kentucky State Police arrested 37-year-old Michael F. Colvett of Benton Monday. The parents of a 16-year-old told school officials they suspected an inappropriate relationship with their daughter.  He's charged with unlawful transaction with a minor. According to a criminal complaint, the parents of the 16-year-old girl first found out about an inappropriate relationship between their daughter and Colvett back in February.  After that, the girl's parents and school officials warned Mr. Colvett to only have contact with her for school matters.  Police say he broke that warning. 

According to the criminal complaint, the girl's father found recent personal text messges, emails and records of late night phone calls between the band director and his daughter.  The teen later claimed she had a sexual encounter with Colvett.
