Ranee Sue Proper, 41, a former vocal music teacher at Holly High School in Holly, Michigan has been arrested and arraigned on felony sex charges on allegations that she had sex with two male students at her home and the high school.

Proper is charged with five counts of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree.

Authorities are refusing to say if the boys were students of Proper but have indicated that the alleged sexual misconduct took place between December of 2007 and April of 2008. Proper reportedly came to the attention of authorities in May by way of a parent bringing allegations to police.

Reportedly rumors of alleged improper relationships between Proper and students surfaced near the end of the last school year. Proper resigned from the school system in the midst of the investigation.

Bond was set for Ranee Proper in the amount of $50,000 with her next court appearance set for October 24th.

A former Monroe High School teacher was in court Monday after being arraigned in November on a charge of indecent exposure and having sex with a student. Kelly Ann Abdo, of Luna Pier, pleaded innocent to the count.

Monroe County Prosecutor William Nichols' office said Abdo is accused of having sex with the student in a car on a public street, next to a house where there was a high school party. Other students told the prosecutor's office that they saw the two naked in the car.

A local high school teacher who also serves on Mancelona's school board is in jail after being accused of having sex with a student.

Antrim County Prosecutor Charles Koop wouldn't identify the suspect, who teaches at Forest Area High School near Fife Lake.

But Mancelona Public Schools Board member Bill Avery confirmed the suspect is fellow board member Frank E. Moser.

Moser was arrested Friday morning and police obtained a warrant that alleges he committed third-degree criminal sexual conduct by having sex with one of Forest Area High School's female students, 17, at his Mancelona home in November.

"I'm just kind of saddened and stunned," Avery said. "It's horrible."

Avery said he expects Moser will resign from the Mancelona school board, and said he's overwhelmed with grief for Moser's family and the student.

Margaret Sullivan Keely, already facing misdemeanor charges for failing to report her husband's alleged sexual abuse of an Oxford teenager, now is facing contempt of court charges.

On Oct. 30, the Brandon Township resident and former Oxford High School teacher, was in Clarkston 52-2 District Court for a pretrial hearing before Judge Dana Fortinberry while her husband, 64-year-old registered sex offender William Arthur Keely, faced a preliminary exam.

During the preliminary exam, the 16-year-old victim in the case testified. At one point during her testimony, both the prosecutor and Keely's defense attorney, Richard Rosenberg, approached Fortinberry's bench for a discussion.

That's when, according to court recorder Jill Palulian, Keely allegedly said or mouthed two phrases to the victim: "I love you" and "I miss you."

Palulian said because the alleged phrases were communicated while the attorneys were at the judge's bench, it's not certain whether they were mouthed or spoken.

The State Board of Education voted yesterday to permanently revoke the teaching license of a Marysville High School teacher who, school officials say, admitted to kissing a sophomore girl. Clifford O. Lewis, 46, was an industrial-technology teacher at the high school from 2005 until he resigned in July 2007. Before he taught in Marysville, he was a teacher at Worthington Kilbourne High School and Columbus' Northeast Career Center. According to police and school records, Lewis kissed and hugged the girl three times, including at least once in his classroom. He said the inappropriate contact began when the girl asked him to kiss her. Later, he told officials, the girl asked him to have sex with her.

Lewis told school officials he rejected that advance. He was not charged with a crime. Also yesterday, the state board voted to take no action against Stacey L. Carna's educator licenses. Carna, the former principal of Ashville Elementary, had been accused of tampering with students' standardized tests at the Pickaway County school in the spring of 2007. After defending herself against her colleagues' accusations at a five-day hearing this summer, the hearing officer ruled that there was no evidence that the tests had been altered or that Carna had done anything wrong.

A Math Teacher who lives in Edwardsburg has been given two years in prison for downloading kiddie porn onto his home computer. 62 year old Julian Randall Perry taught part time at Clay High School in South Bend. He was allowed to retire when the investigation was announced. Apparently he was tagged by Federal Cyber Cops for downloading the material. A search of his computer turned up the illegal photos. He will also do 5 years of probation and pay a $5,000 fine.

A Marquette middle school teacher has been ordered to stand trial on accusations of having sex with an underage girl a dozen years ago.

Forty-nine-year-old Kevin Wilson is charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

A preliminary examination was held Monday. Marquette County District Judge Dennis Girard ruled there was sufficient evidence for a circuit court trial on both counts.

Wilson is being held in the county jail. He taught computer science at Bothwell Middle School and has worked for the Marquette Area Public Schools for 20 years. He is accused of having sex with the girl twice in 1996, when she was between 13 and 16 years old.

The Breckenridge teacher charged with seven counts of criminal sexual conduct with a 15-year-old female student will spent one year in jail for her actions.

Donita Brady, 51, was also placed on five years' probation Monday by 29th Circuit Court Judge Randy Tahvonen.

In addition, she will have to register as a sex offender when released from jail.

The charges were reduced to gross indecency between females Aug. 18 when Brady agreed to plead no contest, which is not an admission of guilt but treated that way for sentencing purposes.

Brady originally was charged with five counts of first-degree CSC involving digital penetration or oral sex, each of which would have carried a maximum sentence of life in prison, and two counts of second-degree CSC involving sexual contact, each punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Forty-one-year-old Steven Sanger also received 30 months of probation at his sentencing Tuesday in Kent County Circuit Court.

The former Byron Center High School science teacher and track coach was accused of using a digital camera to secretly snap images of the girl's underwear in June 2007.

Investigators found no photos. Sanger repeatedly denied the charge.

He was convicted in August of attempting to capture or distribute an image of an unclothed person.

A school counselor accused of having sex with a student was in court Thursday.

After several delays a preliminary exam for accused sex offender Carrie Denbow has finally begun.  Denbow appeared in Judge Charles Filice's court this morning to face charges that she had sexual relations with a student.

She was a counselor at the Hill Academy in West Lansing from 2005 until 2007 when the alleged crimes took place

A former student testified today that back in early 2006 when he was just fifteen Denbow performed oral sex on him in her office at the school.

He also told Ingham County assistant prosecutor Guy Sweet that she went to a motel with him and two other students in February of 2006 to drink and have sex.

The victim said, "Well, I asked her did she want to go get a hotel room and she said she had to think about it because she was kind of scary about messing around with me cause I was so young and she said she had to think about it. And at the end of the day I asked her again and she said yes."

A former Oak Park teacher accused of sexually assaulting two young boys in an empty special-education classroom was back in court Thursday morning to find out if he would face a third trial. James Perry, 33, formerly a teacher at Key Elementary School, was convicted of the assaults in 2006. Prosecutors had wanted to retry Perry, but decided there is not enough evidence, so all charges have been dropped in the "interests of justice."

A former Flint school teacher charged with having sex with a 12-year-old student was told to get a new attorney Friday.

Flint District Judge Nathaniel C. Perry III rescheduled Allanah Benton-Wells' pretrial hearing for next month after granting a prosecutor's request to disqualify her attorney.

The Genesee County Prosecutor's office argued her attorney, Michael B. Haley, had a conflict of interest because he accompanied Benton-Wells' sister on an interview with Flint police about the allegations.

Haley said he "respectfully disagrees" with the ruling and plans to appeal. Benton-Wells, 42, is charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person under the age of 13, a felony punishable by life in prison. She is currently free on a personal recognizance bond.

South Lake High School teacher was arraigned this morning on charges she engaged in sex acts with two different, current male students on June 26.

Melissa Lavender, 33, stood mute to the charges of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. St. Clair Shores Police said the incident happened on a former student’s parents' boat that was docked in a St. Clair Shores marina.

Lavender’s lawyer, Mike Dennis, waived the formal arraignment, meaning that the allegations were not spelled out before Judge Joseph Oster this morning in the 40th District Court in St. Clair Shores.

Dennis said Lavender has strong backing in the community and that some members of the school board attended the morning arraignment. He called the charges an abomination. "It's completely out of character for her." St. Clair Shores Det. Harold Bergeron said alcohol is believed to have played a part in the alleged crime.

An Oxford High School teacher and her husband are facing felony charges in the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard says 53-year-old Margaret Keely befriended the girl when she was a freshman in 2006, and invited her to do jobs around their home in Brandon Township, where the teen met 64-year-old William Keely.

AWayne County Circuit Court Judge Craig Strong handed down a sentence of 3 to 15 years today to the Canton teacher convicted of having sex with a student.

The teacher is Stephanie Stein, a 32-year-old mother of two, who talked last year with a student half her age about having children together, then listened to the student testify against her in her four-day trial last month.

Stein was found guilty of two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct; sending sexually explicit photographs to a minor — a nude photo of herself — and using a computer to send the images.

As a 52-year-old Big Rapids man begins serving a six-month term in the Lenawee County Jail, his family is vigorously pursuing efforts to overturn his jury conviction.

Edward Michael Kowalski, a White Cloud Middle School teacher, was sentenced Friday morning by Lenawee County Circuit Judge Harvey A. Koselka to six months in jail with credit for 51 days served and placed on probation for five years for his conviction of accosting children for immoral purposes and using the computer and Internet to commit a crime.

“This is a miscarriage of justice,” said Shar Baxley of Atlanta, Kowalski’s sister. “Our family is scattered across the country, but we have pooled our money. My brother is going to be cleared.”

Kowalski, a former Teacher of the Year in his district, was convicted by a jury April 23 in an Internet predator sting. Adrian Police Department Detective Vincent Emrick posed as a 15-year-old girl during Internet chats.

A former Roseville High School French teacher accused of having sex with her teenage classroom aide pleaded no contest Thursday in Macomb Circuit Court to two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Janelle Batkins, 42, who is free on bond, was accused of having five encounters in her Harrison Township home with a then-17-year-old student during the 2006-07 school year.

While the relationship was consensual -- and the age of consent in Michigan is 16 -- Batkins was charged under a Michigan law that makes it a crime for teachers to have sex with students, regardless of their age.

She initially was charged with nine counts of criminal sexual conduct involving the male student, but attorneys in the case were able to reach a plea agreement before trial at the request of the teen's family.

"We were ready to proceed and go to trial and put the defendant behind bars," Macomb Assistant Prosecutor Jean Femminineo said during the court hearing. "(The victim's family) indicated they want to end this today. They are tired of it. They don't want to go to trial. They want this to be over."

A former Unionville-Sebewaing Area Middle School teacher has officially been charged with secretly videotaping female students as they undressed at his home.

Joshua J. Brinkman, 27, was arraigned Friday on one count of capturing/distributing an image of an unclothed person, which is a felony.

Brinkman, who previously coached the USA Varsity girls basketball team, was suspended from the district Jan. 15 after he was accused of taping the girls. He resigned from USA Schools later that month, due to “personal reasons.”

“There were a number of students over at his residence at the time,” said Mark Reene, Tuscola County Prosecutor. “It was a mix (of boys and girls).” Reene said he was not sure of the reason why the students were at Brinkman’s Fairgrove-area home on Jan. 14, which is when the alleged recording took place.
