Gustavo Bordenabe
12-28-08

Gustavo BordenabeA borough man, who is a math teacher and soccer coach at a Jersey City high school, was arrested Friday on charges of carrying a sexual relationship with a minor for more than a year.

Gustavo Bordenabe, 44, was taken into custody at about 4 p.m. at police headquarters following a joint investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and borough police. Bordenabe is a math teacher and girls soccer coach at Hudson County Prep High School, according to the school's Web site.

Bordenabe, of Roberts Place, is being held at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River in lieu of $200,000 cash bail, said Deputy Chief Michael Mohel, spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office. Bordenabe is charged with sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual contact.

The victim is 16 years old, Mohel said, and the alleged assaults took place at a home here. Further details about the charges and the relationship between Bordenabe are not being released to protect the identity of the victim.

Mohel did say, however, that the assaults took place over the place of more than a
year.

School officials from Hudson County Prep, which operates as part of that county's
Schools of Technology district, were notified of Bordenabe's arrest on Friday, Mohel said. Neither school or district officials could immediately be reached for comment.

Emma Painter
12-19-08

A teacher suspended from Kingsway Regional High School in Woolwich Township, Gloucester County, was found guilty yesterday of trying to persuade a 17-year-old female student to recant statements about the girl's sexual relationship with another teacher.

Emma Painter, 46, a tenured physical education teacher and field hockey coach at the time of the May 2007 offense, is scheduled to be sentenced by Superior Court Judge M. Christine Allen-Jackson on Feb. 13.

Painter, of Clayton, faces a mandatory minimum of five years and a maximum of 10 years in New Jersey state prison on the misconduct conviction. She could receive up to five years on the witness-tampering verdict.

Judge Allen-Jackson continued Painter's $10,000 bail pending sentencing. She conducted a non-jury trial of the charges three weeks ago and rendered her verdict yesterday.

The student whom Painter tried to influence acknowledged having a consensual sexual relationship with Erica Umosella, another Kingsway health and physical education teacher.

Peter J. Halas

Peter J. Halas'

A Panel of appellate judges today ordered a former Point Pleasant Borough High School history teacher Peter J. Halas immediately paroled from state prison, where he has been serving a seven-year term since 2006 for official misconduct stemming from a sexual relationship with a student.

Judges Ronald B. Graves and Jane Grall of the Appellate Division of Superior Court reversed a decision last year by the state Parole Board that denied Peter J. Halas' bid for release on parole.

The judges said the Parole Board had insufficient facts to support a determination that there was a reasonable expectation that Halas would violate conditions of parole.

In their written opinion, the judges noted that Halas, now 32, sought counseling within a month of his arrest in the case and, while participating in that counseling for 11 months, made progress in addressing factors that led to his first and only violation of the law. The judges also noted that Halas had no infractions while free on bail or while incarcerated.

Halas, of Manasquan, pleaded guilty April 25, 2006 to official misconduct, admitting he had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old female student for three months in the previous year.

James Kearney, Jr.

Police say 37-year-old James Kearney, Jr., a coach at Princeton High School, has been arrested on felony sexual misconduct charges involving a 17-year-old high school student.

Investigators say Kearney engaged in a "sexual relationship" with the teen at an unspecified location in the township on Dec. 1. Kearney was arrested four days later.

Kearney, who also teaches phys-ed at Trenton's Kilmer Elementary, was released from police custody after posting his $50,000 bail, according to police. Police didn't identify the gender of the alleged teen victim.

Authorities would only say that Kearney coaches at Princeton High, and they wouldn't confirm if he is on the coaching staff of the high school's varsity football team.

A drama teacher at Old Bridge High School, charged with having sex with a male student, was due to be released from jail tonight after making bail.

Lisa Glide, 35, of Howell, who is charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, posted the $100,000 bail set Friday at Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick.

G. Robert Wills of Princeton, a contract attorney with the state teachers union, was hired Friday to represent her.

"Like everybody, she is presumed innocent until proven guilty," he said.

Glide was arrested Wednesday at Old Bridge police headquarters. Christie Bevacqua, assistant Middlesex County prosecutor, said investigators learned of the sexual relationship Nov. 25. She declined to say how investigators found out or how long the relationship lasted.

The boy was between 16 and 18 years old and a student of Glide's, she said, declining to release further details to protect the identity of the victim.

School officials said the victim graduated in June.

A former Whippany Park High School mathematics teacher admitted Monday to having an inappropriate personal relationship with a female student from September 2007 until this past February.

Secaucus resident Brian T. Coar, 25, pleaded guilty in state Superior Court, Morristown, to endangering the welfare of a child -- a 17-year-old student -- from Sept. 1, 2007, to Feb. 21 of this year, when the girl turned 18.

Coar, who was employed by the Hanover Park Regional district only from September 2007 to June 2008, also agreed to forfeit his teacher's certification in secondary mathematics and can never hold a public or private teaching or coaching job again in New Jersey or elsewhere. He has agreed not to seek other public employment, either.

Coar admitted his guilt to Judge Thomas V. Manahan and was accepted into the county's Pre-Trial Intervention program for first-time offenders.

Robert Dilullo

A former substitute teacher at Ocean City High School in New jersey was sentenced to a year in jail for providing alcohol to a student.

Robert DiLullo, 24, of Upper Township, will have to serve 77 of the 364 days before he is eligible for parole. He will not be allowed to teach again or serve in public office.

DiLullo pleaded guilty this year to endangering the welfare of a child by providing alcohol to the student three times, beginning in 2006 when she was 15.

Initially, DiLullo was indicted on charges of second-degree sexual assault. Those charges were dismissed but the subtext of those dismissed charges remained a big part of Friday’s hearing. Assistant Prosecutor Matthew D. Weintraub repeated the allegation Friday that DiLullo had oral sex with the student at his Upper Township home. In a victim-impact statement, the girl, not identified in court, said DiLullo should have to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law.

Keri Ann Brekne
10-21-08

Keri Ann BrekneThe defense attorney for former Lopatcong Middle School teacher Keri Ann Brekne claims her sentence of 15 to 30 years is illegal.

After Brekne's sentencing Oct. 10 in Northampton County Court, attorney Scott Wilhelm said he planned to ask for the sentence to be reconsidered because President Judge F.P. Kimberly McFadden didn't explain her reasons for the sentence.

- allowing three "unnecessarily" long victim impact statements instead of one.

- relying on "unsubstantiated and embellished and/or fabricated factual allegations" made in the impact statements.

- ignoring that Brekne took full responsibility for her actions by waiving a preliminary hearing and pleading guilty in deference to the victim.

Wilhelm also takes issue with the $5,000 fine McFadden ordered.

Brekne pleaded guilty to five counts of felony aggravated indecent sexual assault in Pennsylvania and faced a maximum of 50 years in prison.

A Sussex County Technical School math teacher pleaded not guilty today to a 13-count indictment charging him with having sex with one male student and sexual contact with another.

Richard Koppenaal, 38, of Frankford, who was arrested last November at the school in Sparta, allegedly had sex with a male student in the back of a classroom during a tutoring session, and in various spots in five towns, including an Andover motel and a Branchville park. Eleven of the 13 counts against Koppenaal relate to his alleged contact with this student. The remaining two indictments stem from allegations concerning a second teenager.

Koppenaal faces up to 62 years in prison and fines of $830,000 on all counts. Koppenaal, who is married and has three young children, has no prior criminal record and denied the allegations during his arraignment today in state Superior Court in Newton.

"We enter pleas of not guilty to all charges," said his defense attorney, Paul Selitto.

There are currently no plea bargain offers on the table, Sussex County Assistant Prosecutor Francis Koch told Judge N. Peter Conforti. An unspecified plea offer had been made by prosecutors but had been rejected by Koppenaal, Koch said.

Assistant Prosecutor Francis Koch said Stanziale — who did not enter a plea to the charges — must have no contact with the alleged victim or her family.

Stanziale will submit a letter of resignation to Sussex Tech, but he will not be barred from teaching elsewhere, attorneys said. The defense presented the letter to Judge N. Peter Conforti during the court hearing.

A once beloved Teaneck middle school teacher was sentenced Friday to 8½ years in prison and lifelong parole for sexually assaulting a former student.

“You realize what you have done to this child?” Morris County Superior Court Judge Salem Vincent Ahto said to James Darden. “You made her a woman well before her time in a very inappropriate way.”

Darden, 37, said he had no explanation for his deeds and apologized to his victim.

The victim, who is now in her 20s and is studying to be a teacher, said Darden, as someone who abused trust, is a “monster” who should be locked up for a long time.

She also denounced some teachers who were present at the sentencing to support Darden, and that her experience with “these poor examples of role models” is what prompted her to choose a career in teaching.
