A former Mansfield City Schools teacher already serving four years for sexual battery could face up to another 24 years behind bars. Dustin Powers, 36, was indicted on three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Indictments were released Monday by the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office.
Also indicted was a Bellville police officer currently on unpaid administrative suspension. Maurice King, 33, 3555 Possum Run Road, was indicted for attempted receiving stolen property (four counts), dereliction of duty (two counts), failure to report a crime and receiving stolen property.
In regard to Powers’ charges, Richland County Assistant Prosecutor Bambi Couch-Page said each count is a felony of the second degree since Powers was convicted previously of sexual battery with a minor.

 A Columbus City Schools employee was arrested Thursday after police said he was the source of child pornography that was distributed over the Internet.
Webb David Rieder, 32, a classroom aid at Valley Forge Elementary School in Columbus, Ohio has been arrested and charged with pandering sexually oriented matter involving a juvenile.
Detectives seized Rieder's two computers from his home on Burgyone Court on Monday. According to the search warrant, police downloaded a file that contained a movie of "preteen boys engaged in sexual activity." Investigators also found "114 compact discs in a paper bag,"
Rieder is employed by the City of Columbus, and works as a teacher's aide at Valley Forge Elementary School.
Liam Westbrook, who lives in the same apartment complex as Rieder, said he was quiet and rarely had any visitors to his home.
"It's kind of a shock," Westbrook said. "He lives right next to us and even though he was quiet, he didn't give me any trouble."

Carolynn Hatcher, 25-years-old teacher and housemother at Midwestern Home for Children in the village of Pleasant Plain, Ohio has pleaded guilty to three charges of sexual battery. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped three additional sexual battery charges. She was orginally charged on allegations that she had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old male resident of the home and became pregnant with the teen’s child.
Hatcher was indicted on six counts of sexual battery. The alleged crimes reportedly happened during April and May of this year. Hatcher, who worked at the facility with her husband was fired by the group home in June.
Hatcher came to the attention of authorities when another child living in the group home reported the relationship.
Prosecutors say the boy came into state's care in 2004 after he was believed to have been physically abused and neglected. "Hatcher was supposed to break the cycle of abuse and be part of the solution".

Another high school teacher in trouble with the law after allegedly having inappropriate contact with an underage student.
Malvern High School's 22-year-old wrestling coach, Mark A. Common, was arrested Tuesday morning at the Superintendent's Office on sex charges involving a 16-year-old female student.

A former Fairless middle-school teacher is headed to prison for having a sexual relationship with an underage teen.
Stark County Common Pleas Judge Richard D. Reinbold Jr. sentenced Kathryn Gill to four years in prison Monday, with the option of placing her on probation after six months.
Gill, 29, will be subject to counseling, must register as a sex offender for the next 25 years and has to pay a $2,500 fine. She pleaded guilty in August to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
Gill has no prior criminal record. Defense attorney Anthony Koukoutas said she had pleaded guilty to spare the victim or her own family any more pain.
A tearful Gill didn't speak during the hearing. She has resigned from the district and surrendered her teaching license.

 A former Troy High School assistant band director and music teacher appeared in court on Thursday and changed his plea.
Jared Wolfgang changed his plea on three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

 A former Miami East schools teacher and coach accused of contacting a 15-year-old girl regarding sexual activity will go on trial Dec. 11-12 in Miami County Common Pleas Court.
Chad Widener, 37, of rural Casstown, was indicted last month by a county grand jury on a felony count of importuning.
He pleaded not guilty at arraignment Aug. 22 and is free on his own recognizance with the condition he has no contact with the alleged victim. The trial date was set Tuesday, Sept. 2, at a pretrial conference with defense lawyer Jose Lopez, special prosecutor Ralph Bauer and visiting Judge James Stevenson.
Bauer, Shelby County prosecutor, and Stevenson, Shelby County Common Pleas Court judge, were appointed to handle the case to avoid any appearance of a conflict by Miami County prosecutors and judges. Widener's father, Ron, is a Miami County commissioner.
The indictment accused Chad Widener of taking steps on Dec. 6 to "solicit another ... to engage in sexual conduct" with him with the person allegedly solicited being a minor older than 13 but younger than 16.

James H. Clay looked straight ahead for a few seconds before closing his eyes Thursday, Aug. 28, after he was found guilty of felony sexual battery by a Miami County jury that deliberated for around 80 minutes.
The courtroom was silent as Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Welbaum read the verdict for the former Troy Christian schools basketball and football coach, accused of sexual activity with a 15-year-old student between September 2006 and February 2007.
Clay, 41, of Piqua, and about a dozen supporters sat quietly before leaving the courtroom without comment. His lawyers, Steve Dankof Sr. and Thomas Intili of Dayton, refused to comment. When asked if an appeal would be filed, the lawyers did not answer.

 A man once entrusted with educating and coaching students at Madison High School will now spend three years in prison for having sexual encounters with one of them.
A judge gave 32-year old David Wagner that sentence Thursday.
Wagner admitted he had a sexual contact with an 18-year-old girl he coached in softball, but maintained that it was a consensual relationship.
Because of his position of authority, however, the crime is a third-degree felony. On Thursday Wagner pleaded with a Butler County judge for leniency, saying his wife and family need him as well.
"I know I have to be punished," he said with tears in his eyes, "But I hope, as I said in my letter to you, that you can consider my family as well. I have two small children who I am very important to and the worst thing I ever had to do in my life was hold my daughter last night and tell her that I had to go."

 A former 9th grade teacher at Shore Junior High School in Mentor has been sentenced to 3 years in prison for having sexual contact with a student.
Maggie Laughlin, 23, broke down in court and apologized during the sentencing hearing.
She had previously pleaded guilty to 8 counts of unlawful sexual contact with a juvenile. Laughlin told the judge she had performed oral sex on the student.
Laughlin could have faced up to 12 years in prison. Her defense lawyer asked the judge to give her probation since this was her first offense. In the end, the judge followed the request of the prosecution which had asked for the 3 year prison term. Laughlin was arrested in June. The job at Shore teaching math was Laughlin's first teaching assignment out of college. Laughlin passed all the required background checks before being hired because she had no previous criminal record.

A former teacher who was sent to prison for attempting to meet a teenage boy for sex learned Monday that he will not be released from prison early.
Mark Boster was sentenced in April to a year in prison. Boster, 46, pleaded guilty to arranging a date over the Internet with a 14-year-old boy, 10TV News reported.
The boy was actually an undercover police officer posing as a teenager. A judge denied Boster's request since he has served only four months of his sentence, 10TV News reported. In addition to serving the rest of his prison sentence, Boster has also had his teaching license revoked. He was formerly a teacher with Columbus City Schools.

A former assistant band director convicted of having sexual relations with two underage females was sentenced Friday to two years in prison and will be labeled a sex offender for the next 15 years.
In addressing the court regarding the actions of former Milton-Union High School assistant band director Anthony Spahr, a mother of one of the victims said his “quest for self-satisfaction” has left many victims, and for that there is “no sentence long enough.”
“You not only stole her virginity, but you also stole her innocence,” she said. “You took away the spring in her step, the sparkle in her eye. You ruined her senior year of high school.”

 A teacher accused of writing love letters to a junior high school student pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Harrison County on Monday. Richard Prusha pleaded not guilty to menacing by stalking, a fourth-degree felony. Prusha is accused of writing several love letters to a 13-year-old female student while teaching at Harrison Hills Junior High School, officials said.
The girl's parents said they found the letters and turned them over to the school, prompting the investigation. Michael Washington, assistant Harrison County prosecutor, said Prusha was released on his own recognizance and is not permitted to have any contact with the alleged victim or any other underage girls -- with the exception of family members -- until the court makes a final decision.

A Brunswick karate instructor is going to prison for 12 ½ years for having sex with teenage girls. In April, 32-year-old Gary Gray pleaded guilty to 40 charges, including sexual battery and gross sexual imposition.

Jason Simmons, who played for the Buckeyes in the early 1990's, faced up to 15 years in prison when he was sentenced Thursday in Dayton.  Michael McKinney, 26, a former social studies teacher at Arlington Heights Academy in Cincinnati, Ohio has pleaded guilty to one count of attempted gross sexual imposition.
McKinney was originally charged with three felony counts of sexual battery in a somewhat unique case. A substitute teacher on a long-term assignment at Akron's Buchtel High School was placed on unpaid leave last week after being charged with corruption of a minor and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
Albert J. Calabrese III, 24, of Kent, was arrested last week after Hudson police received a report involving Calabrese and a 14-year-old girl from Hudson. Stow Police Chief Louis Dirker Jr. said today that Calabrese and the girl allegedly chatted via the Internet, then met at a Hudson area movie theater and drove to a Stow parking lot, where the alleged incident took place May 17.
Connie Hathorn,the Akron Public Schools executive director of human resources, said Calabrese was placed on leave without pay pending further investigation. Calabrese is free on a $15,000 personal recognizance bond. He is to appear at a hearing June 3 in Cuyahoga Falls Municipal Court.

An internal investigation at Strongsville High School last November convinced school officials that no criminal activity occurred between social studies teacher John Bacho, 32, and a 17-year-old junior in his class.
But a Cuyahoga County grand jury disagreed Monday, charging Bacho with five counts of sexual battery and a single count of possession of a criminal tool -- his 2002 Ford pickup truck -- in which police suspect one of the incidents took place.
"Bacho gives all the dedicated teachers a black eye," County Prosecutor Bill Mason said. "We entrust our teachers with the responsibility of educating our children, not to become predators in the classroom."

CLEVELAND -- A former Lakewood teacher will spend two years in prison after a judge sentenced him Wednesday on charges connected to sexual involvement with a student. William Rabel agreed to a plea deal in January and pleaded guilty to 10 counts of sexual battery. On Wednesday, Judge Dick Ambrose sentenced Rabel to two years on each of the 10 counts. The sentences run concurrently, so the total amount of the sentence is two years in prison.
The judge also labeled Rabel as a Tier 3 sexual offender which means Rabel will have to register with law enforcement every 90 days for the rest of his life. Before sentencing, Rabel addressed the court and said he was deeply remorseful for what had happened. Rabel was charged after his sexual involvement with a 17-year-old female student was discovered last year. The former student also addressed the court and asked the judge to show leniency for Rabel who she described as a best friend. Rabel resigned his position with Lakewood Schools.

When Upper Arlington swim coach and art teacher Kevin Chapman was charged Feb. 26 with two counts of rape and sexual battery against a former student, something predictable happened.
Some leapt to his defense. They voiced their support in letters to the editor, in e-mails to The Dispatch and on a Facebook page. They criticized police for making a show of his arrest, though Upper Arlington police said students were kept out of the hallways during the arrest.
Just as predictably, others presumed he is guilty. Cases involving an adult in a position of trust who has been accused of sexually abusing children or teens divide communities like few others.

A former Madison Comprehensive High School teacher who showed pornographic materials to students was sentenced this morning to three years probation.
Benjamin S. Williams, 23, of Galion pleaded guilty Jan. 30 to two felony counts of disseminating matter harmful to a juvenile and two misdemeanor counts of contributing to the unruliness or delinquency of a child
Richland County Common Pleas Judge James Henson sentenced Williams to 18 months in prison and suspended that sentence in favor of probation. Henson noted probation was the recommendation of the people who completed a pre-sentence investigation report on Williams. Under the statute, Williams will not be designated as a sex offender.
