John Lulay

Retired teacher has been found innocent of sexually abusing a young relative.

The verdict came Thursday from Judge Lynn Ashcroft, who criticized members of the two families involved.

He says they put the child in the middle and tried to get her to say what they believed or disbelieved, rather than putting her needs first.

The non-jury trial lasted three days. Lulay's defense lawyer said the child's mother coached her.

The 59-year-old Lulay was a middle school teacher in Sublimity from 1976 to 2003.

He cried at the verdict and told the Salem Statesman Journal he planned to see his grandchildren. He had been prohibited from being around children.

During his cross-examination of the mother, defense attorney Walter J. Todd tried to shore up what he said were earlier inconsistencies by the mother in statements she made to doctors and staff at a child-abuse assessment center in Salem, where the victim was taken, and in police interviews.

Roxanna Guadalupe Mata
06-08-08

Roxanna Guadalupe MataA teacher’s assistant who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing teenage boys won’t have to spend time in prison.

Following a plea bargain, Umatilla County Judge Garry Reynolds this week sentenced Roxana Mata to three years of probation on charges of rape and sexual abuse. Mata, 23, must pay a $500 fine for each victim and can’t have contact with children other than her own two kids and the one she is expecting. She must also perform community service, write letters of apology to her victims, take part in an alcohol program and register as a sex offender.

If Mata violates probation, she could be imprisoned for 30 months.

Hermiston police arrested Mata in June on suspicion of sex crimes involving two juveniles. She had worked less than a year as an educational assistant at Armand Larive Middle School in Hermiston. Prosecutors said it does not appear Mata met her victims through the school system.

Joseph Garner

A former Ontario High School teacher was sentenced in Malheur County Circuit Court Monday after he pleaded guilty in September to seven charges of online sexual corruption of a child in the second degree.

Joseph Tracy Garner was sentenced to 36 months supervised probation; ordered to complete a sex offender treatment program, which includes conditions of his probation that don’t allow for any contact of children except as it is approved by his treatment provider; it also stipulated he cannot have the Internet or use it at his home; provide transcripts to his treatment provider of court records; complete 30 days of work crew; and pay a $1,500 fine, $1,000 of which was suspended, Malheur County Deputy District Attorney Erin Landis said.

Landis said Garner must also register as a sex offender in the future. He said the sentence also came with the stipulation, if Garner is employed in the future, his probation officer must be able to access and monitor any use of the Internet. Garner also had to complete a polygraph and disclose any information regarding potential sexual contact he may have had with a minor prior to his sentencing.

Landis said the sentence was issued with the understanding he did those things satisfactorily. The transcripts are being submitted to the treatment provider to help develop a suitable program, Landis said.

A former track and field coach was back in a Multnomah County courtroom Tuesday, facing additional charges that he sexually abused two more underage girls.

Askia Brown, 33, was indicted in August on one count of sex abuse in the second degree and two counts of sex abuse in the third degree. Now, he’s facing five more counts of sex abuse involving two new victims, according to Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Josh Lamborn. Brown, 33, was arrested on August 22.

After a track workout, police said, Brown brought one of the alleged victims back to his office building in southwest Portland and then the 14-year-old girl said a post-workout muscle massage crossed the line. Detectives said Brown admitted to massaging the minor in the immediate area of her genitalia.

Andrew John Humphreys

A former private school teacher and high school coach must now register as a sex offender after being convicted of having sex with a 17-year-old girl.

Andrew John Humphreys, 27, appeared in Douglas County Circuit Court for sentencing Tuesday. The man pleaded guilty in July to the misdemeanor charge of contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor.

Humphreys was 26 when he had sex with the teen he’d met at their church, Oakland Church of Christ, where he served as a youth group leader, said Deputy District Attorney Colin Benson.

Humphreys at the time was teaching at Umpqua Valley Christian School and was coaching sports at Oakland High School, where the girl was a student.

In court Tuesday, the prosecutor said the two met through the church youth group in March of 2007. Over the next several months, Humphreys began text messaging her, then calling her. The two then began to go on what Benson described as dates and eventually started having sexual contact.

Jeremiah Gunner Scott

Askia BrownA former teacher at the North Coast Christian School in Hammond has been accused of having sex with a 15-year-old student.

Warrenton Police officers arrested Jeremiah Gunner Scott, 26, of Warrenton. Hewas also a youth pastor for Warrenton First Baptist Church. Scott is charged with eight counts of third-degree rape, a felony, and one count each of third-degree sodomy, a felony, contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor and sexual misconduct.

He faces from 90 days to four years in prison for the third-degree rape charges, according to Ron Brown, Clatsop County's chief deputy district attorney. Brown said results of Scott's psychosexual evaluation - should he agree to take one - or whether more victims come forward would be circumstances that sway the length of Scott's sentence, should he be found guilty.

Sarah Jayne BridgesSubstitute teacher Sarah Jayne Bridges was arrested Friday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m., at the Eugene Police Department, on charges of Rape in the Third Degree, Sodomy in the Third Degree and Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree.  She was lodged in the Lane County Jail.

A complaint was made by Eugene School District 4J to the Eugene Police Department on Friday morning alleging Bridges, 24, had sexual activity with a male student. The complaint alleged Bridges had the encounter in March of 2008, with her former student, who is currently in middle school.  The alleged activity occurred off campus.

After contacting police, district administrators reported the allegations to the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission, the state body responsible for issuing teaching licenses. A conviction on these charges would mean an automatic loss of teaching license.

A former high school teacher at Grand View Baptist Church in Beaver Creek was sentenced Monday, Jan. 7, to 27 months in federal prison after he admitted in October that his computer held hundreds of child pornography images.

Justin Michael Gillen, 26, of Oregon City, pleaded guilty Oct. 22 in federal court to a child pornography possession charge. He was arrested in July 2006 at his Warner Milne Road apartment after federal agents served a search warrant for his computer and found at least 266 child pornography images, most of them depicting sex acts between young boys and adult men.

U.S. District Chief Judge Ancer L. Haggerty ordered Gillen to serve three years on federal supervised release following the completion of his prison term. He was further ordered to forfeit his personal computer seized from his residence by FBI agents.
