Kevin J. Feyas
01-05-09

Kevin J. FeyasA former teacher at Millcreek Township's Tracy Elementary School has lost his Pennsylvania teaching certificate over allegations that he acted inappropriately with students years ago.

Kevin J. Feyas, 50, also has been under investigation by the Erie County District Attorney's Office over allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with minors, one of the county's top prosecutors said. The prosecutor said the investigation ran into difficulties because of concerns over the statute of limitations.

Feyas surrendered his teaching certificate in lieu of discipline because of "alleged inappropriate conduct with students," the state Department of Education said in a public notice Dec. 22. The department lists the date of action against Feyas as Sept. 26.

As the Millcreek Township School District was investigating him, Feyas in September 2006 resigned from the district, where he had an Instructional II certificate to teach students in kindergarten through sixth grade and hearing-impaired students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Feyas was working at Tracy, 2624 W. Sixth St., when he resigned, according to school district records. Feyas also formerly taught sign language at Gannon University.

"We had a mother call us who had spoken to her son about going over to Mr. Goettler's home," said Cpl. Cheryl Polena, of state police. "He had been text messaging back and forth. She read some of the text messages. They sort of concerned her so she brought them in for us to look at, and the investigation evolved from there."

Joseph Robert Johnson, 32, a substitute teacher in the Avella Area School District and basketball coach at Avella High School in Avella, Pennsylvania has been arrested and charged with unlawful contact, communications with minors and criminal use of a communications facility.

Johnson’s arrest was the result of an Internet sting conducted by the Barrett Township Police Department.

It is alleged that Johnson using the name “Coachjoe32,” had sexually explicit chats on the Internet with an undercover Barrett officer who was posing as a 14-year-old girl, that Johnson asked the girl to send cell phone photos of herself to him, and explained how he wanted to have sex with her.

Allegedly Johnson provided a phone number to the “girl” and police traced that number to Johnson’s residence where a search warrant was served.

Following his arrest Johnson was being held in Washington County Jail on $50,000 bond.

Reportedly he will be transferred to Monroe County where Barrett Township is located and where charges were filed.

A school spokesperson indicated that Johnson will no longer be working for the school district.

Erica L. BakerA former substitute teacher in the Erie School District was sentenced today to three months to a year in the Erie County Prison for having consensual sex with a 17-year-old female student in August and September 2007.

The defendant, Erica L. Baker, 25, had entered the sentencing hearing expecting a sentence of probation, based on a plea deal between the Erie County District Attorney's Office and the defense.

But Erie County Judge John Garhart said incarceration was appropriate because Baker, who was teaching at Strong Vincent High School when she met the victim, was in a position of authority when she had sex with her. "What she did was with a protected class of person -- a minor," Garhart said. He also sentenced Baker, of Corry, to four years of probation, and said he would consider placing her on work release.

Keri Ann Brekne
10-21-08

Keri Ann BrekneThe defense attorney for former Lopatcong Middle School teacher Keri Ann Brekne claims her sentence of 15 to 30 years is illegal.

After Brekne's sentencing Oct. 10 in Northampton County Court, attorney Scott Wilhelm said he planned to ask for the sentence to be reconsidered because President Judge F.P. Kimberly McFadden didn't explain her reasons for the sentence.

- allowing three "unnecessarily" long victim impact statements instead of one.

- relying on "unsubstantiated and embellished and/or fabricated factual allegations" made in the impact statements.

- ignoring that Brekne took full responsibility for her actions by waiving a preliminary hearing and pleading guilty in deference to the victim.

Wilhelm also takes issue with the $5,000 fine McFadden ordered.

Brekne pleaded guilty to five counts of felony aggravated indecent sexual assault in Pennsylvania and faced a maximum of 50 years in prison.

Charges against Stephen W. Shaffer, 55, of Grove City, Mercer County, were bound over to court following a two-hour preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge Art Cook of Somerset.

“The allegation is a public servant – a teacher – apparently misused that trust by getting apparently vulnerable young girls and taking advantage of them,” Somerset County District Attorney Jerry Spangler said.

But defense attorney David Weaver of Johnstown argued the case lacked evidence, pointing out that there were no hospital records and questioning the credibility of the alleged victim.

Jason W. Stalnaker

As family members and friends wept, Jason A. Stalnaker was sentenced Thursday to 17 years in prison for sexual abuse of a 15-year-old girl that originally prompted 295 charges against him.

In handing out the prison term, Superior Court Judge Robert B. Young expressed disgust at the duration and frequency of the abuse and the manipulation employed by Stalnaker in luring the child into a sexual relationship. After arresting the defendant in January, officers said the former teacher at Dover's Capitol Baptist School had targeted the child because she had been molested by her grandfather at age 7 and "appeared to be weak."

"From my review of this case," Young said, "this really has been about as despicable behavior as can be imagined."

The victim was 21 by the time she went to police officers in December, making allegations that led to charges that included first-degree rape and continuous sexual abuse of a child. She told the judge Thursday that she lost her innocence at Stalnaker's first touch and that she accepted his apology as the beginning of an effort to rid herself of its ill effects.

Todd SheererCiting Todd Sheerer's "blatant and knowing disregard" for the law, a Lancaster County judge Monday tacked $1 million onto his bail after reproaching the former Warwick High School teacher for contacting the student he is accused of sexually exploiting.

Judge Jeffery Wright increased Sheerer's bail to $1.25 million cash after Sheerer violated the conditions of his release by meeting with the alleged victim, a female Warwick student, last month.

The bail violation was the second for the former music teacher and band director, who is charged with multiple counts of corruption of minors for allegedly engaging in sex acts with the student from January 2006 to January 2008.

Prosecutors allege the relationship began when the teenager, now 18, was 15. Seated with family members at the rear of the courtroom, the teen sobbed Monday as Sheerer, dressed in a dark-green prison jumpsuit, was led into the room in handcuffs.

Assistant District Attorney Karen Mansfield asked Wright to revoke Sheerer's bail and make him forfeit the $250,000 his family posted to gain his release.

A former Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School principal was sentenced Thursday to serve five years probation on a corruption of minors charge for sending inappropriate messages to a student while he was employed as a softball coach in another school district.

Chad N. Stover, 30, of Cranberry, pleaded guilty to corruption of minors in March, admitting in Venango County Court that he knew the girl was a minor when he sent sexually explicit messages to her between March 2004 and May 2006 while he was employed as an assistant girls softball coach at Cranberry High School.

At the sentencing, District Judge Robert Boyer ordered Stover to surrender his teaching and administrator licenses and to pay $1,325.50 in fines, costs and restitution.

Additionally, Stover will not be granted admittance to A-C Valley or Cranberry school districts and must complete Project Point of Light, a treatment program for adult and adolescent sexual offenders and victims of sexual abuse.

Prosecutors say Dolan asked the girl meet him at Miles Park less than a mile from the high school. One text message said, "I will meet you at Miles Park with 200 bucks if you will." And later, another text: "I am at Miles right now in a green shirt."
