Arielle Beck

Arielle BeckA second trial has been scheduled for a former Moab schoolteacher and coach who served prison time for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl before the Utah Supreme Court overturned the conviction.

Arielle Beck, 29, will stand trial in a Salt Lake courtroom beginning April 20.

Beck was sentenced to prison for sexually abusing Kelly Sowell, a student who hanged herself two years after Beck's conviction. Last year, however, the state's high court ruled 7th District Judge Lyle R. Anderson overstepped the line of impartiality when he posed 48 questions to Beck while she was on the witness stand, possibly influencing the jury.

Sowell and Beck met in the summer of 2002 when Beck was an assistant softball coach for the teen's team. Beck later volunteered as a teaching assistant in the girl's English class. Prosecutors said Beck groomed the teen for a sexual affair, sending her love letters and E-mails.

Beck has been charged with one count of sodomy, a first-degree felony, and three counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony. She also faces misdemeanor charges for child abuse, supplying alcohol to a minor and allowing an unlicensed person to drive.

Gabriel E. Carlin

Gabriel E. CarlinA 34-year-old Washington City man scheduled for sentencing Tuesday on two counts of third-degree felony attempted sexual abuse of a child was ordered to undergo a diagnostic evaluation instead.

Gabriel E. Carlin appeared before 5th District Judge Eric Ludlow, who ordered Carlin to turn himself in at the Washington County jail Friday by 6 p.m. to be taken into custody by the Department of Corrections, which will perform the evaluation. Carlin, a former teacher, pastor and day-care operator, was originally charged with four counts of first-degree felony aggravated child sex abuse for kissing and fondling an 11-year-old girl in March 2006. At the time, Carlin owned the now-defunct East Harbor Christian Academy in Washington City where the victim was a student.

Heidi Nestel, an attorney with the Utah Crime Victims Legal Clinic representing the victim in the case, asked Ludlow on Tuesday to have Carlin taken into custody immediately. She claimed Carlin was a flight risk and that his freedom on $100,000 bond is causing mental distress to the family, who wants to see him in prison. Ludlow was not swayed, but warned Carlin to report to the jail Friday or face an automatic prison term.

He was once a popular coach and teacher at Piute High School.

Now, Lawson Sweat is an alleged rapist. Sweat resigned his position in October after police launched an investigation about sexual misconduct.

But that investigation is over and the Piute County attorney has filed formal charges against Sweat.

Sweat faces two counts of raping a sixteen year old girl that attended the school in 2005. According to an affidavit filed with the court, that’s when Sweat invited “two teens to his home”. Once there, investigators said, “Sweat provided both girls with beer and watched movies.” After one of the teens left, “Sweat began to kiss the alleged victim and started to remove her clothes.”

Leisa Ward

A 37-year-old Utah mother -- and former substitute teacher -- has admitted to engaging in illegal sexual acts with at least five teenage boys.

Leisa Ward, a mother of four, pleaded guilty on child sex-related charges in a deal that led prosecutors to drop the most serious counts against her.  Ward agreed to plead guilty on charges of unlawful sexual conduct and, as a result will not be charged with anything else.

Ward was arrested in Nov. 2007 following reports that she engaged in sexual activities with at least five boys, whose ages were 16 or 17 at the time.  Nephi Police said the allegations started as rumors that were eventually corroborated.

Ward, who formerly taught as a substitute teacher in the Juab County School District, will be sentenced on Feb. 28 but due to her plea deal she will avoid serious felony and misdemeanor child sex and lewdness charges.  However, she still will face sentencing on 11 charges stemming from the illegal sex acts.
