Ted Thomas JohnsonTed Thomas Johnson was a popular teacher and an award-winning band director. He also had a dark side--an attraction to young girls that he could not always control.

Johnson, 48, was sentenced in Stafford Circuit Court yesterday to 20 years in prison with all but four years suspended.

He had previously pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual battery and two counts of attempted custodial indecent liberties with a child.

Johnson, a longtime former band director at Osbourn High School and a teacher at a middle school, molested three girls who were spending nights at his home with his daughter.

All three girls were either 12 or 13. None were students of his. According to evidence presented by prosecutor Michael Hardiman, an investigation began in February when a 13-year-old girl accused him of improperly touching her. The girl said she woke up at 6 a.m. Feb. 18 to find Johnson's hand on her buttocks.

Anthony K. HaywoodA physical education teacher at Brentsville District High School has been charged with having sexual contact with two teenage students, police said Saturday.

Anthony K. Haywood, 27, of 10240 Launch Circle, Apartment 202, in Manassas, was arrested Friday at 2 p.m. at the Prince William County schools administrative office on Joplin Road, police spokeswoman Erika Hernandez said.

Detectives began investigating Wednesday after one of the teens filed a report with the school resource officer, Hernandez said.

Haywood is charged with having “inappropriate sexual contact” with two 16-year-old girls who attend Brentsville High School in Nokesville, Hernandez said. According to police, the incidents occurred after schools hours and did not happen on school grounds.

Dr. Robert Scott, Brentsville’s principal, said Haywood—a third year teacher—was placed on administrative leave Thursday morning.

“The superintendent’s staff and [county schools] Risk Management Office have been aware of this situation since it arose and did not hesitate to place Mr. Haywood on administrative leave when police investigators determined that there was enough evidence to pursue warrants,“ Scott wrote in a Saturday morning e-mail to students, parents and community members.

He said Brentsville’s guidance director and mental health team will meet with students in Haywood’s classes on Monday and Tuesday.

Dan Hegarty
12-01-08

Stanley Deloach Jr.A Fairfax County police have charged a local teacher with taking indecent liberties with a child and now both the police and parents of local children want to know whether or not this was an isolated incident.

On Nov.10, an eight-year-old boy reported that he was in the locker room of the Spring Hill Recreation Center around 8:30 p.m., changing clothes after going swimming, when he was approached and touched inappropriately by a naked man. The boy was not physically injured, and later that evening he reported the incident to his parents.

The child gave a description of the man to Fairfax County police, who released a composite sketch and flyers seeking information about the suspect.

On Tuesday, Dan Hegarty, 39, of Alexandria turned himself in to the police. He was identified with assistance from the public after the composite sketch was circulated.

The picture of Hegarty's life has him surrounded by children. A longtime seventh grade math teacher at the exclusive Browne Academy in Alexandria, Hegarty is also a devoted and tremendously popular coach and referee for boys hockey in Montgomery County. His involvement with so many local children has made the news of his arrest extremely upsetting to parents.

Thomas best
11-11-08

The former Fredericksburg Christian School teacher who pleaded guilty in July to aggravated sexual battery, will spend 12 months in jail. Thomas G. Best, 53, was sentenced by Spotsylvania Circuit Judge David H. Beck to a total of 45 years on three charges, but 44 of those years were suspended.

Beck told Best that the decision came after hearing from witnesses about how remorseful Best is for his actions.

Beck said he also took into consideration the minimal risk that a counselor said Best was of being a re-offending sexual predator.

"He has shown an indication of a high degree of remorse," said David Heeb-ner, an expert in sex-offender treatment who evaluated Best.

Heebner added that Best was in the lowest range of recidivism for sex offenders.

Best pleaded guilty July 9 to indecent liberties and two counts of aggravated sexual battery of the woman, who is now 23 years old. He admitted to inappropriately touching her for more than six years.

Best's defense attorney, Mark Murphy, asked Beck to consider the counseling his client already completed as well as his desire to rehabilitate himself.

Fifty-three-year-old John B. Shulick of Catlett had been a teacher at Bull Run Middle School in Gainesville before his arrest in March. Shulick admitted in federal court in Alexandria that he made videos of a 16-year-old Fairfax County girl engaged in sex acts.

Police also found other images of child pornography on his computer. Shulick said in court papers that he met the girl on the Internet and she initially told him she was 19. According to authorities, the girl admitted she was having sex with Shulick after the mother's boyfriend saw her with an older man. Court papers give no indication that Shulick engaged in misconduct with any of his students.

Ting-Yi Oei

Ting-Yi Oei The assistant principal at Freedom High School in South Riding was arrested yesterday and charged with possession of child pornography.

Ting-Yi Oei, 59, of Reston, who has spent more than 29 years in area school systems, was taken into custody at the school and brought before a Loudoun County magistrate before being released, according to the sheriff’s office. Yesterday was the first day of school for Loudoun teachers and administrators.

Oei’s attorney, Steven D. Stone, called the charges “outrageous” and said his client was being “persecuted” by the commonwealth’s attorney. The grand jury handed down the indictment against Oei on Aug. 11, court documents show. But Stone said neither he nor Oei were informed of the charges until sheriff’s deputies showed up at the school yesterday.

“Everyone knows where Mr. Oei is. He’s not hiding out. If he were indicted and told about it, he would have gone in,” Stone said. “The timing raises questions. Why the public spectacle? Mr. Oei is a responsible person, and he intends to fight these charges because they’re wrong.”

During that time, the student celebrated her 17th birthday, and deputies say the father of two gave her a card that said “I love you.”

One of Maddy’s former students says it’s hard to believe.

Bayliegh Bowles, an eighth grader at Narrows High School told us, “He was a nice teacher. He was nice when we had him at class and stuff, and it was just weird.”

The school district did not agree to an on-camera interview, saying this case is a personnel matter. But the assistant superintendent tells WSLS that Maddy is no longer employed by the school district.

Paula TomlinFor the second time in as many weeks, a Staunton city school employee has lost her job and faces felony charges. The alleged victim is a 16-year-old boy who attends classes at the Genesis Alternative School. Authorities say he and Tomlin began a sexual relationship about three weeks ago.

Leonardo Brenes

Leonardo Brenes, 42, was a Spanish teacher at Colonial Heights Middle School, but also coached a girls soccer team at the high school. Prosecutors say it was there where the married man started an affair that lead to more than just one sexual encounter with one of the students.

In Colonial Heights, he is charged with attempted carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent liberties with a minor, both felony charges. If found guilty, he could be deported back to Costa Rica after serving his time. “This is ultimately a decision to be made by immigration authorities,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney William B. Bray. “But usually, a convicted felon with non-citizen status faces deportation.”

Brenes is scheduled to appear at Colonial Heights District Court at 2 p.m. June 26.

He faces similar felony charges in Prince George — indecent liberties with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Commonwealth’s Attorney Jay C. Paul confirmed that the charges involve the same underage student.
